Conversations with Hector Castro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hector Castro.

Hector Castro

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Like a great storyteller once told me, the start of your journey begins when you step your feet on route.

My story really began when I started to work on myself. For the sake of my fellow readers, I won’t go deeper on that. Nonetheless, I wouldn’t be where I am today without embracing my surroundings. I am privileged to have grown up embracing the arts and having the support from my close family & friends. I say this sincerely, I don’t know when I’ll get to thank that.

To answer the actual question, I got where I am today by simply being involved. I showed up to shows. I asked questions. I supported in any way I can. I was true to myself, and my peers believed in me.

I now DJ at cool bars, run my own festivals, design my own work, write my own music, promote my favorite art, speak my mind, share my resources, & have fun while doing it.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe my road continues to be one of the smoothest paved ones where I choose to avoid, and instead walk on the muddy trail next to it.

My life has been full of letdowns. It was only three years ago when it finally got interesting (As of 2024). Some would say my peak was in 2019. When I was throwing 3 shows a month, working with promoters, and getting recognition by important clout vampires.

I personally believe the best thing that could’ve happened to me was my downfall. 2020. Why? I gave up on the ego I once held. I stopped caring about what people think of me. I began to please myself instead of the people that weren’t really there for me.

My journey was one where I was dropped onto a bag of money, then lost it, only to regain it by simply following the trail of pennies on the floor. I didn’t give up. And I feel fine. I am grateful for the people that believed in me and never left.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The “what do you do” question is one I personally feel intimidates any “creative” in San Diego. I like many, love to create. It’s my job. It’s my passion. It’s essentially my life.

My bragging artist rights extend to: graphic design, management, curation, journalism, archivist, vinyl DJ, bassist, drummer, karaoke singer, writer, arts & culture coordinator, and to some, a controversial public enemy #1 (maybe).

I would like to say I’m known for being a community leader?

I’m the most proud of my work as a music promoter, but I’m not proud of the music scene in San Diego. You can really dislike something if you really know it, y’know? I moved on from that. Although I do love my city. I still love concerts.

I think what sets me apart from the others is that I am very true to what I do. I will stay til 12am to pick up the chairs and tables. I really care about my community, and I don’t really say it as much. I spend more time actually doing it.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Three easy points:

1. Presence

2. Honesty

3. Authenticity

Everything else is just letting people know, and they do the rest.
