Today we’d like to introduce you to Destin Cramer
Hi Destin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a 25 year old nonbinary artist, originally from Seattle, WA. I moved to San Diego after being diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder and escaping an abusive relationship. My entire life I have used drawing and painting as a way to express my internal world of emotions, and to find beauty in the world after experiencing so much trauma throughout my life.
I paint and draw the faces of my alters, characters that I like, and landscapes that bring me peace when so much of the world seems frightening.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I haven’t had any formal art training until very recently, and have spent years teaching myself how to draw portraits, animals, and paint complex landscapes. It took a long time to get to the level that I am today, and I’m still learning. I recently just started college at San Diego City College to obtain a degree in Fine Arts and hope to eventually sell art for a living.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I tend to focus on digital art as well as gouache painting, but use a variety of mediums. Certain alters have different styles and prefer different mediums, but my favorite has to be acrylic, gouache, and digital art.
I’m most proud of my progress in my art, as it is entirely self obtained and is the result of years of practice and self study.
I believe what sets me apart from other artists is my unique style, and the way each alter in my system has a unique style as well.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I have taken many risks throughout my life as a way of finding my true identity and escaping toxic environments. A few years ago I was in an abusive relationship, and in order to get out I had to take a risk and leave the situation, and move to San Diego with no income whatsoever. I ended up staying with my best friend and wonderful roommate, Julia, but my life would have been very different, and I might not even have been here today, if I hadn’t left.
I now use my second chance at life to make art every day, and spend as much time as I can studying for my AA in Fine Arts.
