Today we’d like to introduce you to Moneisha Wells.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in Los Angeles, CA, always loving all things beauty and fashion. I’d spend hours flipping through magazines, dreaming about becoming a creative director.
But life had other plans. Right out of high school, I joined the Navy and spent nine years serving my country. It was an amazing experience, but the creative itch never went away.
After my service, I moved to Chicago, where I got my initial start in the beauty and fashion industry. I graduated cosmetology school 2014, I started working as a freelance makeup artist, which I got a chance to work on a few editorial photoshoots. Also, going to fashion school as well. But life happens, I started a family and needed to help make ends meet, so I returned back to work a 9-5 as a government contractor.
Fast forward now back in San Diego. With my husband’s military career taking us there (in 2015), I decided to dive back into my passion. I had to go back to school (CA Law) I enrolled to Paul Mitchell the school San Diegoin July 2019, A year and some change later I became a hairstylist and makeup artist, working in salons and on photoshoots, building my skills and making connections.
My years in the industry, ten total. have been filled with amazing experiences and the joy of making people feel beautiful. But I still wanted to do more. I wanted to create something that truly reflected my vision. So, I took a leap of faith and built my own space. The Consult HQ is an Editorial Salon located in downtown San Diego. its more than just a salon or a studio; it’s a place where hair, makeup, and fashion come together. It’s a place where creativity flows and clients can truly transform.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No it has not been easy, I don’t think any journey is, really.
Although many struggles have happened one that stands out the most is the struggle to believe in yourself and the vision. Honestly, when things get tough having belief is hard to do. I remember lots of nights crying because I was unsure of what I was doing. I think sometimes we think because we have a passion and want to do something we will have all the answers, and that’s simply not true. I had no clue how to run a business and what it look like to build this out. but I did it. I spent countless hours research the how’s and why’s on business building I took master-classes, asked a ton of questions and found amazing mentors.
