Life & Work with Sarah Herzdame of San Diego – University Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Herzdame.

Sarah Herzdame

Hi Sarah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started tattooing in 2013 back in Germany. I basically got in this because of the great opportunities to travel and connect to people all around the world. Which – in very turbulent 10 years – I definitely have done. I was located in Berlin for a long time and mostly traveled Europe but then started going to the US, New York. I worked really hard, building a clientele that I would never want to miss. I am so grateful for all these connections with people I tattooed, it is so special to me. I have a couple clients here that I have been tattooing for 9 plus years in 5 different cities. But when it was time to venture on, California was the only place that really caught my eye. Taking my business to Full Circle Tattoo was definitely the right decision and I am happy to be here now.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s hard for me to say if it was a smooth road or not. I feel like I never had to existentially struggle but I definitely hit times I didn’t know what to do anymore. Coming from another country they make you go through a lot of things to proof that you are worth getting a Visa, it is expensive and you need to show that you are an expert in your field.
Luckily I worked really hard the years prior to applying for the first time and I was able to proof published work in books and magazines and having enough interest in my work over here.

As an artist I guess the biggest struggle is the one you create for yourself. Constantly pushing for more and to create something new. I have gone through different styles of tattooing, constantly changing and trying to be better. It has been so fun to reflect and see what changed over the years and what can I do to keep it going. 10 years is a long time but I feel like I’m just at the beginning of something bigger!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Tattooer, specialist in black and grey work with fine lines and dots/stipple shading. I have gone through some changes, I used to be known for bold lines and ornaments but throughout the pandemic I changed to more delicate finer work. I already went down that road back in Germany but moving to California and being surrounded by more black and grey fineline work definitely helped and inspires me every day.
I was always told that my clean work sets me apart from others. There is no challenge I am not up to when it comes to complicated linework.
Coming from where I started at, being here now, definitely makes me proud every day! I am living the life I always dreamed of and even though there is always room for more I am pretty happy with that.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I can definitely be really strict and meticulous. Not always the easiest characteristic in your private life but definitely a plus in my business! Even if it’s boring and/or repetitive work I have the outcome in mind and I do it without rushing or trying to find shortcuts. I guess that makes me very patient when it comes to the work I do!
