Today we’d like to introduce you to Karmen Lopez
Hi Karmen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up watching my mother take pictures of EVERYTHING. She would pull over on the road and take a picture of a barn or an animal if she found it to be intriguing. I sort of developed an eye for photography that way. I fell in love with photographing people and I have taught myself everything I know. I’ve been a professional photographer for about two years now and absolutely love what I do.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. Just starting up was a struggle. I had no professional experience and no portfolio to get started. So I was offering free sessions and had booked a few but I would show up at the location and wait for an hour and the clients wouldn’t show up. It was super discouraging starting out that way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a photographer. I mainly specialize in family and couple portraits. I love photographing maternity sessions especially, it’s so enchanting to capture the moments before a couple becomes parents and seeing how they glow and imagine this new life they’re creating.
I’ve also been working on expanding to weddings!
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think taking risks is a huge part of life. How are you going to know if you like or don’t like something if you don’t take risks? I took a huge risk in becoming a photographer while also serving active duty. I already work an 8-9 hour day as a Marine and then do mostly sunset photo sessions so that’s a lot of time away from my family. But to make a living out of it once I’m out that’s a risk I have to take. If you want something, you have to do whatever it takes to achieve your goals.
