Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate Nicodemus.
Hi Nate, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was fortunate to be born and raised in San Diego with a large local family. I grew up on lots of time at the beach and an abundance of Mexican food. Beyond the Ocean and the great food though, San Diego County’s incredible biodiversity and cultural diversity continue to provide inspiration to me as a designer.
Drawing and painting captivated me at a young age and my passion for art nudged me to the USC School of Architecture. It’s hard to beat the opportunity architecture provides a designer; shaping spaces for people to experience is a gift.
I worked for a few local Architects, namely Christian Rice Architects and Brian Church Architecture, before launching my own practice. I now live in the La Jolla area with my wife (also a San Diego native), my young daughter, and a large Newfoundland Dog named Moose.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I imagine most big undertakings are not smooth. I’m happy to say it’s always felt like the right path for me despite the challenges.
A lot of my work is custom single family homes or some variant thereof. I think one of the big difficulties with launching your own practice is finding clients who feel comfortable trusting a new face with such a significant task. A home is a deeply personal facet of peoples’ lives and these projects are frequently significant investments. It’s an important decision and I think it can be more comfortable for some to go with a larger, more established outfit.
I’m very grateful to all my clients who have trusted me with their homes. I’ve loved the role I’ve played in shaping beautiful spaces for them to inhabit. It is very rewarding to get to know them, discover exciting possibilities together, and ultimately see their leap of faith pay off.

I founded Nicodemus Design, a Southern California based architecture and design practice, in 2021. We focus on developing design solutions that contribute to our natural and built environment in a positive, harmonious way. The practice strives to create designs that thoughtfully integrate with their context and comprehensively respond to a client’s individual needs. Our philosophy is that the built environment profoundly impacts people’s lives, and that thoughtful design should be accessible to all.
Through a comprehensive design approach and the use of modern visualization tools, we help our clients experience the design process with eyes wide open and full of excitement. We are with you from the initial design idea to the housewarming party. Our aim is to tailor spaces uniquely to our clients by thinking critically and holistically at every step of the design process. We communicate both broad and detailed design concepts to reach a common goal.

How do you think about luck?
Luck plays a large role in business. I think working hard, utilizing my skills/talents, and taking the right risks has also been necessary, but having some well-timed good luck is impossible to ignore. You can’t get very far without help from others and you can’t control when relationships will help your goals.
For example, I’ve been fortunate to meet some amazing contractors with similar outlooks. Sometimes it’s uncanny how moments in my personal life have synced up with referrals from these contractors or their friends. When I ultimately decided to leave my 9 to 5 and launch my own business, the choice seemed almost too obvious. You can prepare and put yourself out there as much as possible, but ultimately the right opportunity has to show up.
I’m a Christian and I try my best to glorify God in all my actions. I believe the right doors will ultimately open and how I choose to navigate the process is more important than exerting my will on the narrative. That perspective has a big impact on my life and business.
