Hidden Gems: Meet Chrissy Powers of Chrissy Powers Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chrissy Powers

Hi Chrissy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi I’m Chrissy Powers, I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist but that’s not how I started out. I graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University in 2004 with a degree in studio art photography and thought that I wanted to work for a magazine in editorial. After graduation I landed my first job at Time Inc. in San Francisco. I work in ad sales there for a year but I missed Southern Ca too much so I moved back and work at Primedia the publishers of Surfer and Surfing magazine back in their prime. I was kind of floundering and knew that the corporate world wasn’t for me. At my core I knew I wanted to help people who were struggling mentally. So I went back to school and received my Masters Degree at Chapman University, where I graduated in 2010.

I started my career as therapist working at a treatment center for dual diagnosis’, eating disorders and drug addiction. I was passionate about helping other’s overcome their eating disorders as I had personal experience with this mental disorder. The therapist that helped me the most with my ED was in recovery herself so that gave me courage that I could help others as well. Once I became a mother I made the choice to stay home with my babies and work part time a few times a week at night in my private practice. I started to document my own motherhood journey and wrote about my experiences becoming a new mom on Instagram and on my blog. It was 2012 and the mommy blogging world was at its peak. I had. no idea was I was doing, but I loved it! I loved connecting with other woman who were learning to be mothers, who were up late breastfeeding and also trying to reparent themselves. I ended up growing a thriving online business as an influencer and blogger.
However by 2020 I was burnt out and felt like influencing was not in alignment with my values and goals as a therapist. I decided to open up my practice again and see clients online and in person, I knew people were struggling more than ever and I wanted to be there for them. Over time my practice grew and has become quite successful. I transitioned from writing and sharing just about motherhood to creating content online about all sorts of mental health issues like: relationships, anxiety, depression, spiritual and religious trauma, embodiment and more.

Recently I have expanded my practice to include ketamine-assisted therapy and have created various programs like “The Embodied Woman Coaching Program”, which teaches women how to live in and love their bodies. One of the best parts of being a coach as well as therapist is that I get to offer individual business coaching designed to help entrepreneurs and creatives build authentic, thriving businesses. Drawing on my experience as a successful therapist, coach, and content creator, I provide personalized guidance to help my clients grow their business in alignment with their values. My coaching covers areas like identifying core values, business strategy, overcoming limiting beliefs, and crafting a brand story that resonates with the right audience. My approach is holistic, supporting both personal growth and professional success, and is ideal for individuals looking to turn their passion into a sustainable, purpose-driven career.

Today, I balance my role as a mother, therapist, coach, and content creator, offering services both online and in my Encinitas office, while continuing to grow my brand on platforms like Instagram, TikTok and Substack.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nope, it’s been extremely bumpy but I wouldn’t change a thing. I learn most from every bump in the road, every twist and turn. The biggest struggle I’ve experience so far was replacing my substantial influencer income during the pandemic with my income as therapist. I did it, which I’m so proud to say but it was not easy. I has no idea how to transition an account that used to be about babies, fashion, travel and motherhood to some heavy topics like sexual abuse, trauma and the invisible metal load of motherhood. At this time my husband was building us a home that was a 10 year dream and plan however because of the pandemic our project was shut down and he was out of work. He stays home with our kids to teach them while I built up my private practice. It took us 2 extra years to complete our housing project and there were days he worked on it all alone while we tag teamed with the kids and scraped by. I know look back on the hardship with a weird fondness. It taught me so much about my capacity for growth and strength.
