Conversations with Giselle Anguizola

Today we’d like to introduce you to Giselle Anguizola

Hi Giselle, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I live a jazzy life, and I absolutely adore what I do for a living. I began my own LLC in 2008 in San Diego, my own personal business dedicated to the arts: swing music, swing dance, and yoga. I have been working as a full time creative artist for almost 15 years, living between San Diego and New Orleans. I’ve hosted swing dance festivals in San Diego, Los Angeles, and all around the world, starting movements to support women in jazz, supporting & hiring the pioneers (legends from classic MGM movies), and linking history to present day art forms – tap and hip hop dance. I became an internationally recognized swing dancer and performer. I’ve hired hundreds of musicians, dancers, and artists in both New Orleans & San Diego. During the pandemic, I provided a safe outdoors space for live music and dance; supporting the swing music and dance community during a very tough time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has mostly been a smooth road. Sometimes it can be tough being a nice and friendly latina woman business owner, the world not always receiving of that open & positive attitude. I take pride in my family values, being fare, treating people with respect, paying others in a timely manner – even if I don’t pay myself, and having honest communication. To be quite frank, I’ve had amazingly resourceful people at my side along the way, with lots of support – so I don’t really have any complaints! Life has been good to me. It can be a mental challenge to choose to have a business devoted to the arts, but it’s always well worth it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in teaching swing dance, playing swing music, and teaching yoga. I have been teaching swing dance for more than 20 years. I’ve been playing swing music for ten years: started out as a tap dancer with the band, then singer, and now guitar player. I’ve been teaching yoga for ten years as well, with probably a thousand classes under my belt. I’m proud of the way I empathize with others, my compassion, patience, creativity, as well as my ability to always do my very best. I get joy from going above and beyond.

What makes you happy?
Practicing yoga, a power heated flow with a shot of really good espresso afterwards, and a restorative class after a long day; that’s my sweet spot and this brings me so much joy. I enjoy working hard with a ritualistic treat, and then relaxing hard – working and playing hard while getting to know myself better, while being in community with others.
