Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Walkr
Hi Jay, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started making music in high school. It wasn’t til a bit after I graduated that my God-brother introduced me to Fruity Loops and I became entranced by music production. I spent the next few years focusing on composition and how I like my songs formatted, but I didn’t get a good grasp on that until maybe 7 years ago. I think within the past 5 years has been the better of my makings, but I feel like I’m still getting better so I don’t want to speak too soon. Regardless, I’m happy with the sounds I’ve curated thus far.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest obstacle has been focus. I’ve definitely fallen off the horse and wandered off from time to time. I get easily distracted by the joy life brings and the adventure of making beautiful connections. But I think it ultimately also contributes to how I work as an artist. Even when I lose focus, I go through some things and in my distractions, I learn new cool things that haphazardly add to my artistic vision and enhance my creative passion.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a musician, among other things. I also produce, compose, draw anime, dabble in fashion, and induce happiness via good vibes. I’m slowly building my way towards being a multi-hyphenate. I feel as though I’m too optimistic for my own good, and yet it has proven to be a strength more than a weakness.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Finding a mentor can be integral for your journey; creative or otherwise. I’ve found a few mentors in my time thus far and have learned so many things from each of them that contribute to my learning and experience as an artist and as a human in development. Networking is essential simply because as humans, we need community and connections to move forward in life. Creative artists can’t have a solid career without knowing somebody, so it’s always nice to know people. I can definitely say this from experience. I’ve met some amazing people and it has taken me a long way each time.
