Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert And Asia Estigoy
Hi Robert and Asia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello! We are Asia & Robert, known collectivly as ToshWerks, a San Diego based Art/Design and Education Studio. We started exhibiting our art at San Diego Comic Con in 2003 and we were known initially for our Comics and Fiber Arts, but we were constanly asked “How do you make that?” We decided that Showing people how to Make Art, is much more impactful than just showing them what We make. We still frequently make art when we feel inspired, and we strive to incorporate that work into new and exciting Craft Workshops and Art Education programs. We have been working closely with the San Diego Public Library since 2004 and we continually aspire to promote Art & Literacy in our wonderful city.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While it has been fun and enriching, it is allways challenging.
We’ve been impressed with ToshWerks, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Creators of handmade Comics, Craft, and Curiosities. Some items include small print-run and handmade Comic Books, Crochet Cactus and Faux Taxidermy. Toshwerks has shown their work at Comic-Con International , Wonder-Con, Alternative Press Expo (SF), New Childrens Museum, Bazaar Del Mundo (Old Town SD) and many other events. Our creations are original, functional artworks meant for all ages.
I believe our foremost dedication to the betterment and enrichment of our community is what will set us apart. For 20 years my wife and partner Asia and I have been working hard to find the best ways to better our world, but more directly our city and community. We started by promoting literacy through art by making comic books and sharing them at comic conventions and craft fairs though-out Southern California. As we expanded the type of writing and art we produced, we found that many of the people that we encountered were curious about our various creative processes. It dawned on us that if we had the opportunity to Teach people to create, instead of just sharing our creations, we could truly impact our community. We have been working with the San Diego Public Library and other institution for years to share what we’ve learned, and we hope to continue doing so for years to come.
How do you think about luck?
We have been very lucky to be able to what we love, but we are Luckier to have an amazing community that supports and promotes Art and Education in San Diego.
