Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Hoxsie
Hi Greg, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My wife and I moved to San Diego in 2019 after spending 30 years on Maui where I owned several businesses including a graphics company, wedding planning business, and a busy photography company. We never saw Covid coming and we went into lockdown almost immediately after getting settled in San Diego. Covid presented some opportunities on the dirt bike trails since there wasn’t much to do inside. While ripping the trails in East County one day, I met real estate photographer on a KTM and it wasn’t long before I was shooting hundreds of real estate listings annually as his part time employee. Circumstances changed for my employer and I ended up managing operations and seamlessly rolling his successful real estate photography business into my own. He remains an important part of my business today and provides on-going support and consultation when needed. My company is Greg Hoxsie Real Estate Photography. Our primary clients are the top realtors in San Diego County. However we also service all of Southern California from the southern border into Orange County, Los Angeles, Riverside County and San Fernando Valley. Some of our services include daytime and twilight photos, aerial drone photography and videography, cinematic video production, Matterport and Zillow 3D virtual tours, floor plans, and 3D virtual videos. I have a small team of photographers and editors who share my vision of providing our clients with the very best marketing content possible. We take great pride in playing a small part in the process of bringing a home to market and showcasing the property in the best possible light. While residential real estate is the biggest part of our business we also do a fair amount of Airbnb and VRBO vacation rental photography as well as some commercial work. We offer 24 hour turnaround on most services and a satisfaction guaranty.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a very smooth road. I tend to view the day to day challenges as opportunities to shine. When something goes sideways, as it often does in business and in life, how you choose to respond is what counts.
I’ve adopted a simple system shared with me many years ago by a dear friend. He used to carry around 3×5 cards in his shirt pocket. One day I asked him about the cards and why he was always making notes on them. “Well, Greg, I’m glad you asked…when I have a decision to make I use the cards to categorize them. The most important category is the stuff that I need to take care of right away. The next category is the stuff that can wait. The third category is stuff that I choose not to deal with at all.”
I don’t carry the 3×5 cards, but his advice a long time ago guides me in business and with personal decisions and helps with my time management.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Although we will photograph any real estate listing in any condition, our primary mission is to make the home as visually appealing as possible. There are a lot of homes for sale at any given time, so it’s important to stand out among the many other listings. Our workflow is a little more complicated because we use a lot of supplemental lighting and a 3 stage editing process for images that have a clean and professional look. We are famous for our eye popping Sunset/Twilight photos that jump off the page. We are fast! We can complete an average sized listing in under an hour and we often have more that one photographer involved on the larger luxury listings. Our pricing starts at just $210 for listings under 1000sf. All of my photographers are licensed drone pilots and very skilled at shooting aerial stills or video. We offer a range of 3D products including Matterport Virtual Tours. Our Cinematic Video Productions are one of our more popular products particularly on the larger homes. Most of our services offer a 24 hour turnaround and if something is not exactly right, we’ll make it right, ASAP!
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
You get exactly what you want when you help enough other people get what they want.
