Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Gonzales
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story, as a photographer, started as kid playing with his parents 90’s point and shoot camera, to a high school kid who has just saved up enough money to buy his first DSLR. I’ve always been obsessed with the idea of capturing a moment and translating it to a single image. I took a photo class during my senior year that really helped me branch out and grow my network in the photo world. By creating an Instagram account to display my work and connect with people that had similar interests, I was able to gain more confidence in the space and develop a creative style that I felt comfortable with. After my first year of Community College, I took a step back from photography to focus on finishing school and getting a degree. At the end of 2023 I went to a concert for one of my favorite artists, Travis Scott, and decided that I wanted to set a goal for myself to get back into photography and eventually shoot photos for my favorite artists! In January of 2024 I revived my Instagram account under the new name @shotbyevang and began posting moments from different concerts that I had been to recently. Over time, I was able to complete my goal of shooting for Travis Scott then some. I shot photos at my first credentialed show for Rebelution, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Kaytranada , and even Kehlani just to name a few! I was even fortunate enough to be invited to shoot at ComplexCon in Las Vegas! This year has been nothing short of an adventure of a lifetime and I wouldn’t have done it any other way if I could. I look forward to all the moment that 2025 has in store!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t say smooth is the right word for it. I would describe the journey as a roller coaster because this industry is fast paced and all over the place. Growing up, I was a very shy kid who didn’t enjoy being around other people and wasn’t confident myself at all. Being in this industry has helped me grow out of that shyness and network with likeminded peers that enjoy similar hobbies! I went to school for Communication Studies at Cal State Long Beach in order to better understand people and maintaining relationships in different environments. The skills I learned have helped me type stronger emails and speak more confidently in public settings.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
All of my previous jobs have been customer service oriented. From working for Disney, to working at Trader Joe’s, I have always been in an industry that puts its customers first! That same motive drives my photography career. I am in it for the clients! I am just as excited to see those photos as the client and always have them in mind when working during the pre and post production process. Event and portrait photography are my specialties and recently I have taken a step into concert photography which has been my favorite to shoot so far! I think what sets me apart from others is my ability to think on the spot and provide solutions, quickly, when needed, consistently. I am able to adapt and learn quickly when it comes to all things media and digital marketing which makes me a useful asset to any team.
What were you like growing up?
I was a very shy kid growing up, who generally clung to his parents until middle school. I wasn’t very confident in my ability to hold conversations and would generally stay silent in group environments. This changed in high school once I began to take more photos and show people the work that I was proud of. After high school, I sought to become a better communicator in order to be able to pursue a business in this people oriented industry.
