Conversations with Harvey A Quintero

Today we’d like to introduce you to Harvey A Quintero

Hi Harvey A, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My passion for video started in the 6th grade, when I would borrow my dad’s old Sony tape camcorder to film my cousin skateboarding. In 9th grade, I got my first digital camera and spent high school filming random adventures with my friends. Toward the end of high school, my camera was stolen, and I shifted my focus to being in a band, which took up all my time.

A few years later, I bought a GoPro to capture adventures with my girlfriend, and it reignited my love for videography. I saved up and invested in a mid-level camera, landing my first gigs filming reggae bands in San Diego. Things picked up quickly, and I went from filming local acts to big-name touring artists in the reggae scene, like Tribal Seeds, Fortunate Youth, Slightly Stoopid, and Josh Heinrichs.

This led me to start my company, Don’t Blink Media. Since then, I’ve worked on projects for companies, events, musicians, weddings, and other creative content. While I’ve dabbled in various types of projects, my primary focus has always been on music related videos.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been plenty of struggles and stress along the way, especially when I decided to take things seriously and start my own company. In the beginning, I often found myself underpaid or overworked, which is tough when you’re just trying to get your foot in the door. There were slow periods where work was scarce, and it really weighed on me. I’d catch myself wondering, “Is this it? Am I doing the right thing?”
Starting out as a videographer also meant wearing many hats—handling everything from creative work to editing, marketing, client communication, and even accounting. Balancing all of that while trying to grow was overwhelming at times. On top of that, keeping up with ever-changing technology and investing in new gear to stay competitive added financial pressure. But despite all of this, I’ve learned that as long as I stay positive and keep pushing forward, things continue to improve. In this constantly advancing world, persistence and passion have been my greatest tools to overcome these challenges.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I primarily specialize in filming for musical artists, focusing on live concerts, music videos, and content creation. I also work on events for companies, as well as weddings and proposals. One project that made me feel like I had “made it” was being hired to film Tribal Seeds at Mission Bayfest. Working with my team of videographers to capture the energy and essence of such a major event with a big band was a huge milestone in my career and solidified my passion for this work. My main creative focus is on storytelling and composition. I believe that every project should tell a compelling story, and I work hard to craft shots that are both visually engaging and meaningful. That said, I’m always learning and evolving, pushing myself to refine my skills and techniques.

When it comes to working with clients, I pride myself on being honest and efficient. I make sure they have a clear understanding of what to expect and what I can deliver, which helps build trust and makes the process smooth and enjoyable. What sets me apart is my genuine approach and my dedication to creating something unique for every client. I aim to connect with people on a personal level and ensure that each project feels authentic and true to their vision

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Always be prepared for things to change at the drop of a hat.
