Conversations with Delanie Freeland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Delanie Freeland.

Delanie Freeland

Hi Delanie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My photography journey started back in 2005 when my dad gave me a handheld camera, specifically for Myspace. I was middle school, transitioning to high school, and that little camera sparked something in me. Over the yers, he upgraded my gear, eventually gifting me a Canon XSI DSLR. I played around with photography, took classes in school, and even explored film photography when I transferred from private school to public school. During that tune, I shot senior portraits for friends, earning my first paid did with one of those sessions.

After a tough break up, I stopped photography for a couple f years. I thought that chapter of my life was closed until my husband surprised me with gear one Christmas. At first, I was upset — thinking I wouldn’t get back into it– but in 2018, I picked up the camera again and rediscovered my passion during a visit to the zoo.

In 2020, one of my good friends from middle school asked if I could photograph her wedding during COVID. It was my first wedding, and felt incredibly honored. Around this time, I reflected on my own wedding experience. I got married before 2020, and while I was so grateful for the memories, I wasn’t;t completely satisfied with my own wedding photos. That realization sparked something in me: I knew I could do better, and wanted t provide my clients with a better experience- one that honored their love stories fully. That moment changed everything. Word-of-mouth referrals spread quickly, and I started getting booked for weddings in the Temecula and San Diego areas. Eventually, I expanded into traveling and destination weddings, turning my hobby into a full-time passion.

Along the way, I noticed a need in the industry for photographers who are truly inclusive and welcoming to everyone, especially LGBTQ+ couples and POC, who often face unique challenges finding photographers who respect and celebrate their love. That inspired me to take an approach that’s different from the cookie-cutter style often seen in my area. I strive to be edgy, authentic, and kind, ensuring my clients feel seen and valued during such a special time in their lives.

Today, I’m paid to be a photographer who not on captures moments but also builds connections and tells stories that are raw, real, and uniquely theirs.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road definitely hasn’t been smooth, and I’ve faced my fair share of struggles along the way. One of the biggest challenges has been imposter syndrome and constantly comparing myself to other photographers or creatives in this industry. I’ve always wanted to be unique and different, so it was hard not to question if I was good enough or if my work measured up. Over time, I’ve learned to embrace my own style and stay true to my vision, but it’s an ongoing journey.

Another major struggle, and one that is not talked abut enough, has been my mental health. I’ve dealt with PTSD and anxiety, which were intensified after a traumatic car accident in 2016 when I was hit as a pedestrian on the side of the freeway while saving a dog. That experience completely changed my life. Over the years, my mental health has been a rollercoaster, and sometimes I’ve needed to step away from social media or the breaks to focus on myself. Which is okay! On top of that, I’ve struggled with medical issues, including endometriosis, which I was diagnosed with last year. For years, I was in constant pain without knowing why, and it impacted my ability to work and stay consistent. Thankfully, I’ve made a lot of changes and progress learning how to prioritize my health, but it was challenging road to get here.

Lastly, transitioning into full-time photography was a huge leap of faith. After getting laid off from my previous office job, I decided to take the plunge. It was scary, but I was lucky to already have a strong foundation. When I announced the transition, the resin as overwhelming, and this last year has been smoother than I expected.

These struggles have shaped me not a more resilient, empathetic person. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and grateful to be in a place where I can share my passion with others while staying true to who I am.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a wedding and couples photographer, and my work is all about capturing authentic connections and real emotions. I specialize in documenting love stories in a way that feels raw, edgy, and true to my clients. While I focus primarily on weddings, I also love working with couples for engagements, elopements, intimate portraits, and even everything from maternity and family sessions.

what sets me apart is my ability to create an experience that is both fun and meaningful. I strive to build genuine connections with my couples, so they feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera, My clients often say I have a way of making them feel at ease, which allows me to capture those candid, unused moments that truly reflect who they are.

I’m especially passionate about creating a safe and inclusive space for everyone — particularly LGBTQIA+ couples and POC, who sometimes face challenges finding photographers who honor and celebrate their stories. I’m proud to be someone they can tryst and feel safe during such an important time in their lives.

One thing I’m really proud of is my ability to bring something different to the table. In a world where many photographers follow the same trends, I strive to be unique, creative, and bd, Whether it’s incorporating a dramatic location, playing with moody lighting, or embracing the imperfections of a moment, I love pushing boundaries to deliver photos that feel one of a kind.

Ultimately, I want my clients to look back on their phots and not just see what they looked like, but feel what they felt. That’s what drives me: preserving emotions, connections, and most of all, memories that stand the test of time.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a very empathetic and sympathetic person- classic Pisces energy, honestly. I’ve always been deeply in tune with others; emotions and had a big imagination. As a kid, I dreams of being a veterinarian, but then I thought about being a teacher (until I realized kids weren’t really for me). After that, I wanted to be a rock star singer! Eventually, when I was given a camera and told I had ‘the eye’, I found a way to channel my creativity into photography, and it’s been a passion ever since. Personality-wise, I’m very strong-headed. If I breve in something, I’ll fight for it and won’t back down. At the same time, I’m very open-minded, love exploring different perspectives and ideas. Do I believe in aliens? Absolutely. Do I believe everyone should be treated equally? Without a doubt. Empathy is a huge part of who I am.
My interests are definitely a little quirky, and I embrace that fully. I love taxidermy and oddities, anything weird and unique. I’d choose the mountains over the beach any day- I feel happiest when I’m surrounded by trees and the peace of nature. Growing up with animals, I’ve always had a deep love for them, and now I have six cats and two dogs, who are my absolute fur children.
Music has also been a big part of my life. I’m a huge Paramore and love the emo era, especially going to concerts. When I can, I even dabble un concert photography, it’s an adrenaline rush to capture the energy of a live show.
All these things have shaped who I am today: a creative, empathetic, nature-loving, quirky soul who always open to exploring the beauty of life,
