Today we’d like to introduce you to Etenesh “Etta” Gould
Hi Etta, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Photography has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Even as a child, I was the one always reaching for the camera, eager to capture moments that felt special. As I got older, friends and family would tell me, “You should be a photographer!”—but it wasn’t until I became a mother that I truly understood the power of preserving memories through photography.
Having children changed everything for me. I found so much joy in documenting their growth, their little expressions, and the everyday moments that I knew would one day be distant memories. That passion naturally extended to capturing other families. There’s something so meaningful about watching families come back year after year, seeing their kids grow, and freezing those fleeting moments in time.
I also love the challenge of storytelling through images—the way a couple glances at each other with that subtle, knowing smile or how a shy child lights up just for a second when they look at their parent. Those are the moments that make my heart full and remind me why I do this.
Building my business has been a journey, balancing photography between raising my boys and navigating my husband’s schedule. But with every session, every client, and every year, I’ve grown—not just in skill but in the way I connect with the families I photograph. There’s always room to grow, and that’s what keeps me inspired. I’m grateful for this journey, the incredible families I get to work with, and the opportunity to do something that truly brings me joy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road—building a brand and finding consistent clients is one of the biggest challenges of running a small business. There are seasons where I’m fully booked and others that are much quieter, and navigating that ebb and flow has been a learning experience. Pricing is another challenge—not just setting numbers, but truly valuing my work and making sure clients see that value too.
My ultimate goal is to grow my photography into something that fully supports my family, but like any small business, it takes time, strategy, and a whole lot of persistence. As a photographer, I don’t just take pictures—I wear every hat. I’m the photographer, editor, social media manager, marketer, blogger, and customer service rep, all while raising my boys and making sure our home runs smoothly. Some days, it’s a lot!
But despite the challenges, I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything. Every session, every family I meet, every little moment I capture reminds me why I love what I do. It’s about more than just pictures—it’s about preserving memories, growing relationships, and building something meaningful for both my clients and my own family. I know success doesn’t happen overnight, but I’m committed to the process, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me.

I’m a San Diego-based family photographer who specializes in capturing genuine, heartfelt moments. My focus is on families, children, and life’s special milestones—whether it’s an annual family session, a birthday, a graduation, or a small event. I believe in creating a relaxed and fun environment where families can truly be themselves, allowing me to document the laughter, the little glances, and the fleeting moments that parents will treasure for years to come.
What sets me apart is my ability to make the experience stress-free and enjoyable—especially for parents with young kids. I understand the chaos that sometimes comes with family photos, and I embrace it! I’ve held babies on my hip while snapping pictures, played peek-a-boo to get that perfect smile, and used all the tricks to keep little ones engaged. I also know how important it is for moms to feel good in front of the camera, so I gently guide families to natural poses that feel comfortable and authentic.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the relationships I’ve built with my clients. Many families come back to me year after year, and I get to watch their kids grow. There’s something so special about being part of those memories and knowing that the images I capture will be cherished for a lifetime.
As a mom of three, I know how quickly time flies. That’s why I’m passionate about preserving these moments—not just as a photographer, but as someone who truly understands how important it is to freeze time, even just for a second. My goal is for families to walk away not just with beautiful photos, but with a fun, easy experience that makes them excited to book again.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
It’s not going to happen overnight. There will be times when you offer sessions and no one signs up—keep going. Then there will be times when your calendar fills up—keep going. Some days will be slow, some will be overwhelming, but every step forward matters.
You’ll work long nights editing, learning, and marketing yourself—often without immediate payoff. You’ll question if it’s worth it. Keep going. Success in photography, like any small business, isn’t instant. It takes patience, consistency, and a belief in your own value.
One thing I wish I knew earlier? Charge what you’re worth. It’s easy to undervalue yourself in the beginning, but don’t be afraid to set prices that reflect your time, effort, and skill.
And most importantly—build relationships. Photography is personal, and your clients will return not just for the images, but for the experience you create. Show up for them, be professional, be kind, and stay true to what makes your work unique.
No matter how hard it gets, keep going. Every photographer you admire started somewhere. You just have to keep showing up.
