Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Grow
Hi Ryan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have always been a passionate film enthusiast. From a young age, I aspired to become an actor, taking classes and performing in school productions. Although that path didn’t materialize, my journey truly began at 13 when I delved deeper into the world of cinema. Since then, I’ve explored nearly every film imaginable. By the time I turned 18, I started focusing on the intricate details that make films exceptional—like cinematography, score, and costumes. Friends and mentors encouraged me to become a film critic, and once I wrote my first review, I knew I had found my calling.
After college, I confidently stepped into the role of a freelance film critic for several publications. This experience opened up incredible opportunities, including representing my outlets at Comic-Con and participating as a panelist in a film class at Carlsbad High School. Although the pandemic paused some of these exciting ventures, I am undeterred in my pursuit. Currently, I leverage social media to share my profound love for cinema, connecting with amazing individuals along the way and creating even more thrilling experiences. This approach has been instrumental in maintaining my mental health, especially as I manage depression and anxiety.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been an incredible journey, and I embrace every moment of it. While some people have suggested that what I do is more of a hobby than a career and encouraged me to pursue something more practical, I refuse to let that dampen my passion. I truly enjoy what I do, and that fuels my determination.
I’ve also encountered critics who ask, “You seem to like every movie you see, so why should we listen to you?” And while there’s some validity to that, I focus on the aspects I appreciate in a film. Too many critics fixate on the negatives, but I believe in highlighting the positives. Every film has its merits, and I celebrate that, regardless of whether it’s something I’d choose to watch again. Creating films is a complex and challenging art, and I respect the effort that goes into it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Being a film critic is a rewarding challenge. The biggest hurdle is deciding where to begin, but once you find your starting point, it’s full steam ahead. I focus on the elements of a film that truly resonate with me. While I don’t expect everyone to agree with my views, I passionately encourage others to experience movies for themselves and form their own opinions. We need to fill theaters instead of relying solely on streaming. Nothing compares to the magic of sitting in a dark theater with your popcorn, soda, and candy, allowing yourself to escape reality for a couple of hours. It’s an experience worth having!
How do you define success?
Success is defined in diverse ways, reflecting individual values and goals. For many, it means achieving personal aspirations such as career advancement or financial stability. For others, it embodies fulfillment in relationships, personal growth, or making a significant positive impact in the community. Ultimately, success is about setting meaningful objectives and deriving deep satisfaction from the journey to achieve them.
