Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Matina
Hi Nick, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started with one boat, the Easter B, out of H&M Landing… six years ago. Today we run a fleet of more than 20 boats ranging from 22 feet to 70 feet and run thousands of private and open party sport fishing trips every year. We attribute much of our success to one simple Golden rule, ‘answer the phone on the first ring ready to help, every single time.’
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have had good years and bad years. Prior to last year, we saw growth of 25% for 4 years in a row. During this time our fleet also grew exponentially year after year going from 1 boat to 20+ in 4 years. Business was doing great!
Last year however saw our first downturn. Everyone was down about 20% due to the bad economy. It was not just us, but the entire San Diego Fleet. The fish were here all year in record numbers, but tourist turn out really waned. The locals kept everything fairly solid, and I am thankful for that.
As we head in to 2025 under new presidential leadership, I am hopeful that the economy improves and that San Diego as a whole, will see its fair share of tourist this year.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have been an inventor and entrepenuer my entire life. I hold multiple patents and have created several enterprise level software applications including online shopping systems, live chat, and booking software.
I am currently building out and making ready my next product, BookingSoftware.AI
This is a software as a service that I will begin offering landings to use as their booking software.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
People can not be happy trapped inside. Humans, in general, need to go outside and touch grass, or ocean. I remember the day well when the ban was lifted on sport fishing and all of a sudden and without notice we were back in business. The following day after they cleared us to run, still remains the busiest day our company has ever seen.
