Inspiring Conversations with Jasmin Pimentel of Bodywork by Jasmin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmin Pimentel

Hi Jasmin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I became a sports massage therapist with the intention of primarily helping student athletes prevent lifelong injuries. I often played through injuries as a student athlete and still experience tension and pain through those areas over 10 years later. I want to help teach the importance of proper body mechanics and how to keep maintenance over one’s body because young people bounce back quickly in the moment so they don’t prioritize proper recovery.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I became a mother while finishing massage school so it slowed down the process of jumping into the business. While I was in massage school, I was working with the athletic department of my local high school as a volunteer but after 2 1/2 years at home with my son, I lost the connections as some faculty had moved on and I needed to regain work experience to confidently work with a young demographic.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I worked in a Physical Therapy Clinic for a year and a half where I had the opportunity to work with all ages and recovery stages. They were partnered with professional and Olympic teams so I was able to work on professional athletes and witness their recovery processes and routines.
I decided to go on my own to get back to focusing on the demographic I want to work with. The clinic was mostly older professionals who can afford regular bodywork and they had me fully booked, but I want to work with those who don’t have the privilege to even seek out body work.
I specialized in a Chinese style of a massage that focuses on acupoints and uses pressure to stimulate the Chinese meridians. I combine this with western techniques to focus on the muscle groups. This allows me to focus on somatic release along with the physical. I find this important for teens and young adults who have to balance home life, school, work, and athletics.
I am known as an intuitive body worker and massage therapist. I customize my sessions to meet a clients need. The Chinese modality called Tui Na utilizes techniques that can be done over clothes so my clients can remain fully clothed if they wish, especially important when working with youth. I prioritize being a safe space for clients.
I also offer cupping.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned while working with others and their health is to never let biases interfere. People can not simply be categorized or labeled based on past experiences I’ve had with other clients. The whole person including their lifestyle and emotions need to be taken into consideration. I do my best to not try and make comparisons and focus instead on individual needs. Being a safe space means being trustworthy in order to allow people to be vulnerable and willing to present themselves as a whole.
