Today we’d like to introduce you to LyKai Johnson.
Hi LyKai, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
From Passion to Profession: My journey into wedding planning began with a deep love for love itself. It all started when I planned my own wedding, 12 years ago, followed by helping friends with their weddings and special events. I found so much joy in creating beautiful, meaningful moments that I knew this was something I wanted to do on a larger scale. To gain more experience, I worked alongside a senior wedding planner, learning the ins and outs of the industry, that experience solidified my passion and gave me the confidence to start my own company.
Like any business, getting started wasn’t easy. My biggest challenges were building a strong vendor network and attracting new clients. It took time, persistence, and hands-on experience to overcome those hurdles. With every wedding I worked, I met more vendors, built valuable relationships, and learned how to refine my craft. Slowly but surely, my business grew, and I found myself doing what I love-helping couples bring their dream weddings to life.
The most rewarding part of this journey has been witnessing the pure happiness of my clients and seeing them on their special day. There’s nothing quite like seeing the joy on a couple’s face when they walk into their beautifully decorated venue or when everything comes together seamlessly on their big day. Those moments make every challenge worth it and remind me why I stared this journey in the first place.
I truly believe that wedding planning is more than just coordinating details- it’s about creating unforgettable experiences filled with love, joy and celebration. I’m grateful to do what I love every day and can’t wait to continue making dreams come true for couples in the years to come.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any entrepreneurial journey, mine has had its challenges. Staring my wedding planning business was exciting, but it wasn’t always smooth. One of the biggest struggles was getting my name out there and building a strong vendor network. In the beginning, I didn’t have an established reputation, so attracting clients and forming partnerships with trusted vendors took time and persistence.
Another challenge was simply gaining experience While I had natural passion for planning and had organize weddings for friends, working with paying clients came higher expectations and responsibilities. I had to navigate unexpected situations, learn how to manage different personalities, and refine my processes to ensure every wedding ran smoothly.
Despite these obstacles, I never let them discourage me. I kept pushing forward, learning from each event, and growing both personally and professionally. Over time, through hands-on experience and building relationships withing the industry, I was able to overcome these challenges and turn them into strengths. Every struggle taught me something valuable, and looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing-it all helped shape me into the wedding planner I am today.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I believe success is a mix of hard work, timing and sometimes, a little bit of luck. In my journey, as a wedding planner, I wouldn’t say luck, good or bad, has defined my path but there have definitely been moments where timing worked in my favor or challenges tested my resilience.
Good luck has come in the form of meeting the right people at the right time, whether it was connecting with a vendor who later became a trusted partner or landing an opportunity that helped grow my business. Some of my best opportunities have come through word-of-mouth referrals, which I consider both a result of my hard work and a bit of fortunate timing.
On the other hand, bad luck has shown up in unexpected challenges, weddings with last minute issues, difficult situation beyond my control, or slow seasons in the business. I’ve learned that what might seem like bad luck in the moment often turns into a valuable lesson. Every challenge has taught me to be more adaptable, resourceful and prepared.
At the end of day, I believe we create our own luck through persistence, relationships and how we respond to the ups and downs. I focus on staying positive, learning from every experience, and trusting that everything happens for a reason.
