Today we’d like to introduce you to Stella Lin
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story begins in a small town where I spent much of my childhood with my grandfather, a gifted watercolor artist specializing in landscapes and animal portraits. Though we didn’t travel much, his paintings brought the world to life for me—the majestic mountains, the ethereal sea of clouds at sunrise, and the playful charm of animals. Creativity ran in my family; my uncles were also fine artists, and I’ve always felt that art is in my blood.
While I loved creating art, I didn’t initially pursue it as a career. Instead, I studied advertising and marketing in college, followed by a master’s degree in media management. Though I stayed connected to art, it was more a personal passion than a professional focus.
Fast forward to 2010, and my life had shifted in remarkable ways. I was a mother of three wonderful kids, juggling the joys and challenges of parenting while searching for ways to nurture their creativity. To my surprise, I found few options in the area. The emphasis in education and activities leaned heavily on academics, technology, and sports, while art—a vital outlet for creativity, mental well-being, and cultural legacy—was often overlooked.
I couldn’t stop thinking about how art had shaped my life, how it had connected me to my family and the beauty of the world. I wanted my kids—and all kids in our community—to have that same opportunity. Art fosters imagination, resilience, and joy, and I believed it could be a transformative experience for children.
So, with that vision in mind, I founded The Artist Lab San Diego. What began as a solution for my family quickly grew into a thriving hub for creativity, now serving hundreds of families, offering a place where kids can express themselves, connect with others, and discover the power of their own creativity.
Art has always been a part of my story, from my grandfather’s studio to my own. And now, it’s part of my community’s story, too—a story I’m honored to share and help write every day.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. Like most businesses, we started with a strong purpose and a vision of success. But good intentions alone don’t make the road easy. We struggled to build a strong team, create a meaningful curriculum, and get our name out in the community. None of it came without challenges.
Fostering creativity means trial and error—and that can be costly. We’re still working to balance affordability with innovation while investing in research and development.
Balancing the roles of business owner, mom of three, and wife has been overwhelming at times. There were moments of exhaustion and self-doubt, but I stayed focused on our mission: creating a space where kids can feel inspired and empowered through art.
We’ve been impressed with The Artist Lab San Diego, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
About The Artist Lab San Diego
The Artist Lab San Diego is not just an art studio—it’s a place for kids to explore creativity and build confidence through art. We focus on hands-on learning, from fine arts to crafts and even digital media. Our goal is not just to teach techniques but to help kids enjoy the process, not just the final result.
What makes us different is that we really focus on creativity over perfection. We want kids to experiment, take risks, and learn from mistakes. Art should be fun, not stressful. Our programs are flexible so kids can develop skills while still having the freedom to express themselves.
We’re also very inclusive. As we grow, we see more kids with different learning needs, including kids on the spectrum and with special needs. We are more than happy to welcome them, and we try our best to adjust our curriculum to support every child.
What makes me most proud is the impact we have on the families in our community. Seeing kids excited about their own artwork and parents telling us how much their kids love coming here—that means everything. It’s not just about becoming an artist. It’s about having a space where they feel inspired, relaxed, and free.
At the end of the day, our mission is simple: make art a fun and meaningful part of every child’s life.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I believe the most important quality behind our success is having a big heart that truly cares about art and education. We are educators, but we are also always students—constantly learning, growing, and adapting.
Being open-minded, staying true to our values, and trusting the process are key. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but with integrity, passion, and hard work, good things will come. When you genuinely care about what you do and the people you serve, that energy shines through and leads to something meaningful.
