Meet Johnny Villamar of Chula Vista

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnny Villamar.

Johnny Villamar

Hi Johnny, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in San Diego. My family and I would move around a lot when I was younger, but we would always try to find someplace within close proximity to Barrio Logan. It is those decisions that have molded me into the person I am today.

I grew up surrounded by a diverse and multicultural environment where I witnessed all types of people and backgrounds. Witnessing the struggles and triumphs of everyday life, both internally and externally, have motivated me and inspired me to push forward. I owe all of this to my parents and the way they raised me. They taught me to listen, be patient, and persevere. They pushed me to be better every single day, and they trusted me to do the right thing. Even now, as I reflect on those times, I remind myself that everyday is a learning opportunity and to “be curious, not judgmental” as Ted Lasso would say.

I graduated from SDSU with a degree in Graphic Design several years ago and one of the things I have always tried to do is give back to the community. Fortunately, I’ve been given the opportunity through my career to use my creative talents and make small contributions over the last decade. From rebranding Super Cocina with my friend, joining the advertising team at The San Diego Union-Tribune, assisting SDSU with magazine layouts, to now being a member of the marketing team at MTS, I continue to remind myself of where I came from and use that to inform my decisions.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Financial situations, rental struggles and the job market in general have all been struggles I’ve faced. It all hasn’t been a smooth road, but one of the things I’ve learned from my parents and those around me is to control what we can and let go of what we can’t.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a multidisciplinary graphic designer and overall creative person. I am someone who is constantly learning new skills and utilizing those for creative purposes. I’m proud of the work I’ve done at places like The San Diego Union-Tribue, SDSU, and now at MTS where I’ve been able to use my love of photography, typography and visual design in many different projects.

Any big plans?
I can’t quite think of anything bigger than marrying the love of my life, Isabel, in March. We got engaged last March during a trip to Venice, Italy, and it now seems like the perfect time to make the next step. We couldn’t be more excited and happy for this new chapter of our lives.
