Hi Alan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The Vietnamese-American Youth Alliance (VAYA) emerged from humble beginnings in San Diego, California, driven by a mission to preserve Vietnamese culture and create meaningful connections within our community. What started as a small group of passionate Vietnamese-American youth has grown into one of Southern California’s most impactful cultural organizations. Our signature event, the San Diego Tết Festival, began as a modest celebration and has evolved into one of the largest Lunar New Year festivals in Southern California. This three-day cultural celebration attracts thousands of visitors annually, featuring traditional performances, authentic cuisine, and family-friendly activities that bridge generations and cultures.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The Vietnamese-American Youth Alliance (VAYA) is not a full-time non-profit but purely the work of volunteers dedicating their spare time to the cause. However, like many grassroots organizations, our journey has been marked by both triumphs and challenges. Leadership transitions: As a youth-led organization, we faced the natural challenge of leadership turnover as members graduated or moved on in their careers, especially when our members are in their early 20s. Resource Limitations: Operating with minimal funding and relying heavily on volunteer efforts. Venue Constraints: Finding and securing suitable locations for large-scale events like the Tết Festival. This year, we moved out of Mira Mesa after 10 years and only found NTC Park in Liberty Station to be suitable. Generation Gap: Bridging communication between first-generation Vietnamese parents and American-born youth has been and is still a challenge. Cultural Identity: Helping young Vietnamese-Americans navigate between traditional values and modern American culture
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a Staff UX Engineer at Illumina, I specialize in building enterprise-scale design systems that transform how the biotech business operates. My expertise spans full-stack development but is primarily focused on front-end development and user experience (UX). What sets me apart is my unique blend of enterprise technology leadership and community impact—I apply my technical expertise to modernize cultural organizations while mentoring the next generation of UX Designers and Engineers. In addition to volunteering with VAYA, I like spending my spare time mentoring UX Design students from my alma mater, the UCSD Cognitive Science program.
What does success mean to you?
I define success as listening to those who need help and positively impacting their growth.
