Today we’d like to introduce you to Marin Martinez.
Hi Marin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My partner and I were at an event with a bartending service and a simple coffee urn off to the side. We both don’t drink, but absolutely love coffee and thought how cool it would be to have specialty coffee drinks catered to events. We loved the idea of bringing people together and elevating an event experience. Common roast coffee was born, with an emphasis on community. Now we cater to all events from local book fairs, baby showers, corporate events and even weddings. Bringing people together one cup at a time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Since our idea blossomed into action, it hasn’t been easy. Our coffee cart is a one of a kind custom cart built with the help of my grandpa and talented friends. It took almost a year from the frame to the final touches, overcoming many road blocks to satisfy construction guidelines for our heath permit. However, we’re so proud of our final project and learned so much along the way. From construction, plumbing, woodworking, and so much more, we are now able to have a clear idea of what works and doesn’t for our second cart build out coming soon!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve been in the hospitality industry for 14 years and I take pride in great costumer service. I bartend downtown and I love interacting with guests that come to San Diego from all over the world. I believe kindness goes a long way and being in such a high volume location, I’m able to provide something so small and make a huge impact in everyday lives.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I follow a group on Facebook of fellow mobile coffee business entrepreneurs. They have been a great resource for anything coffee related, tips, advice, and general support which has been great to have. Another resource is a podcast called “Valor Coffee” which discusses scaling a coffee catering business from their own experiences over the years.
It has been extremely helpful relating to people who have been exactly where I am in my business journey.
