Rising Stars: Meet Maxwell Hobbs of Encinitas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maxwell Hobbs.

Hi Maxwell, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Chase & I (maxwell) have been friends since we were kids. We always had a passion for making music and playing live. Growing up in the midwest, we used to dream of moving out to the coast and living by the beach. When we turned 22 we moved to California and started making music with other talented and like minded musicians in San Diego. D’Arcey comes from a family of well known award winning musical artists. Brian has been a performing and recording artist for nearly 20 years in San Diego, as well as an award winning producer. Together we have a great understanding on how we want to sound and what it takes to serve the song in every sense.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some challenges arise, but are usually resolved by experience and patience. We’ve learned a lot of what not to do along the way playing with several different groups. I think the big take away is understanding the root cause of the issue, which usually is misunderstanding or communication breakdown. Talking through the problems before they snowball, is a huge advantage that we’re pretty good at executing. Time, distance, and vision always come into play with the group, but working through everything is all part of the journey.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Blushtone is the artist/group name, and we are known for our particular sound of shimmer pop. We’re very proud of our RED EP that dropped in 2023. We are going to be releasing a series of singles this year, the first being “Supernova”.

Supernova is a Nu Disco / Shiver Pop anthem describing the experience of overwhelming emotions of a meant-to-be meeting of chance. The infatuation of love and intrigue, while recognizing that those strong emotions are explosive. It can sometimes be a moment that feels so real and true, but can burn out quickly if it is not nurtured. The lyrics are hopeful that you can hold on to this feeling forever and enjoy the moment while you’re still fully present in it.

I’d say the thing that sets us apart from others in San Diego is our highly polished live sound and our acute sense for catchy melodies.

What does success mean to you?
Our definition of success is to be able to devote time and energy into this facet of music, while receiving enough response from the people who experience it, to keep moving forward. If that is emotional response, positive energy, resonance with the songs from fans, monetary gain, or recognition, these are all gladly welcomed. I think being able to create the art you want to make without being told how or when is a success in itself. We’re happy to express ourselves through our art and hopefully that feels genuine to the people listening.
