Today we’d like to introduce you to Donn-Tyler Wood.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have been playing guitar since I was about 12 years old and I am 29 now. Music has always been a big part of my life as both my father and step father were very influential in that regard. I developed my love of rock music from them. It wasn’t until I heard the band Nirvana that I decided I wanted to be a performer. Kurt Cobain was able to take such simple and catchy melodies and riffs and make them sound big and powerful so I thought to myself, “I could do that too!” As a young teen I joined the local School of Rock, SF Rock Project, where I got tons of experience playing in a band setting and performing on pretty big stages around the city of San Francisco where I grew up. It wasn’t until my freshman year of college, though, that I really started trying to form my own band. From there I met new friends and musical collaborators. After college I moved with my band at the time to Los Angeles and after about 8 months, covid-19 hit and all future planned shows were canceled for the foreseeable future. After another year of living in LA without a band I had written and recorded music of my own to stay creative and busy then ended up moving farther south to San Diego. From there I was able to reconnect with my bass player in my previous band who at this point I’ve known and made music with since college and we reformed into an updated version of the previous band with new songs. And that’s who we are to this day. The band is called No Interest and we play in and around San Diego.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest struggle for my previous band was covi-19 for sure. We were making moves here and there in LA. We started making friends with the local scene, recorded a single and even shit a music video but when covid hit, we had to stop almost everything. The creative community, especially the live music scene took a major hit during that time and we all had to get creative to stay relevant.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My band No Interest has been playing locally in San Diego since mid 2022. After a few line up changes we’ve stayed in our current line up for just over a year and I feel like we have fully hit our stride. The songs we’ve been producing in this time I have been really proud of. I feel like we have fully found our sound. I think what sets us apart is each of our individual musical influences. They are all over the place and when we put it all together, we produce some really unique stuff.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The dominant sound is always shifting and cycling around. I feel like alternative rock and heavy shoegaze has been pretty dominant lately and I think we fit somewhere in the middle. Now is a really great time for heavier rock music and I hope it stays that way for a while. I’d love bigger shows and touring for our future. Getting our music to a much wider audience and not just the local scene.
