Meet Stephanie Diaz of SD Therapy Massage & Bodywork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Diaz.

Stephanie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey into massage therapy began in clinical settings, where I worked closely with chiropractors and nurse practitioners. This experience gave me a strong foundation in pain management, injury recovery, and sports performance, and it shaped the way I approach bodywork—with intention, precision, and a focus on helping people move and feel their best.

As an athlete myself—starting with soccer as a kid, then diving into CrossFit during its peak, followed by Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, and now running—I’ve always been deeply connected to movement. That personal experience helps me understand the physical demands of an active lifestyle, and allows me to bring both empathy and insight to every session.

Five years ago, after kayaking through the caves of La Jolla, I felt a strong pull to be near the water and serve a community that values adventure, health, and movement. That inspiration led me to open my own practice, SD Therapy Massage + Bodywork, where I’ve had the privilege of supporting clients who live life to the fullest. I recently relocated the practice to Pacific Beach—just a little further down the coast—offering more space, more privacy, and a renewed energy to continue growing with my clients and community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. I opened my practice shortly after the height of COVID, which brought a lot of uncertainty—especially in a hands-on profession like massage therapy. Navigating health regulations, client comfort levels, and rebuilding trust in in-person care took time and patience.

On top of that, I’ve faced my own physical challenges along the way, including a broken tailbone and a broken thumb at different points in my career. As a massage therapist, those injuries were especially tough—both physically and mentally. But they taught me how to slow down, listen to my body, and continue showing up for my clients in ways that were smart and sustainable. Those experiences ultimately made me more adaptable, compassionate, and committed to long-term healing—for myself and the people I work with.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
SD Therapy Massage + Bodywork is more than just a massage studio—it’s a space where movement, recovery, and wellness come together. I specialize in therapeutic, sports, and deep tissue massage, with a focus on pain relief, performance recovery, and functional movement. I integrate techniques like cupping therapy, Graston, Thai massage, stretching, and Myoskeletal Alignment to create customized sessions tailored to each client’s goals and needs.

What sets my practice apart is the combination of clinical training and athletic experience I bring to the table. Having worked alongside chiropractors and nurse practitioners, I have a strong foundation in injury prevention and recovery. And as an athlete myself, I understand firsthand the physical and mental toll of pushing your body. That perspective allows me to work with everyone from weekend warriors to professional athletes to everyday people dealing with chronic tension or stress.

I’m most proud of the brand I’ve built—one rooted in connection, trust, and genuine care. My clients know they’re not just getting a cookie-cutter massage; they’re receiving intentional, targeted bodywork in a safe and welcoming space. Whether you’re here to recover from an injury, improve mobility, or simply feel better in your body, my goal is to help you move through life with less pain and more ease.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
One of the most important qualities that has contributed to my success is resilience. Whether it was launching my business after the uncertainty of COVID, working through personal injuries, or simply showing up every day for clients with varying needs, I’ve learned how to adapt, stay grounded, and keep moving forward.

I also believe that curiosity and empathy play a huge role. I’m constantly learning—about the body, about movement, about new techniques—and that curiosity keeps my work evolving. But it’s empathy that allows me to really connect with people, to listen, and to tailor every session to what they truly need. It’s not just about working on bodies—it’s about building trust and supporting people through whatever stage of healing or performance they’re in.
