Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Tosti.
Hi Samantha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We began pretty modestly in 2014, as a team of just my husband and myself. He was building cabinets out of our 1 car garage until we received a cease and desist letter. I still had a day job and was working from the dining room table. Today we have grown to a team of 6, and have an office is Carlsbad, CA and Charleston , SC.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There will always be bumps. Neither of us began this journey with much of a business mind, or a thought to what it might be like to be together. All. The. Time. So there were some tricky moments working out how to maintain a successful business and relationship.
In 2022 we lost a beloved friend and team member to a car accident. I find most challenges are solve-able or resolvable, this was just devastating.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I worked with my dad, who is an amazing architect, for a couple of years when I moved back to San Diego. He taught me so much about size and scale and making sure a space feels right before you start to decorate it. We pride ourselves in reimagining each space so that it is laid out the best way possible for the architecture, the client, and all of their specific needs.
One way I think we operate differently is that our first step is to really shut up and listen. We want each project to be very much a collaboration, and our goal is to show you what unique and interesting materials are out there, so that you can find something that you love, that makes you feel something, and then we start to build around that. I find if we only work off inspiration pictures, we see the same thing again and again, because that is what is being put out there online. If we show you materials first hand, you have the opportunity to start to create your own style, and the end product really highlights that.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
My husband and I started and ran a rock climbing company before we started Tosti design. We would take people outside and teach them how to rock climb.
