Today we’d like to introduce you to Lamar Duffy.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi, I’m Lamar — a serial entrepreneur, marketing expert, and the founder of ReferralHero.
I grew up in Pen Argyl, PA, the oldest of three kids in a tight-knit, entrepreneurial family. My mom is an artist, and I spent much of my childhood attending her art shows and craft fairs, which sparked my creativity. My dad ran a landscaping business, and I often helped him on jobs, learning the value of hard work early on. I was homeschooled until 6th grade, which gave me the freedom to explore my interests — mostly swimming, soccer, and chasing new ways to make money.
At 12, I had a paper route and started a lawn-cutting business. By 14, I was the top door-to-door sales rep for our local newspaper. At 16, I began investing in the stock market and used those returns to help pay for college. During summers, I coached a local swim team of 120 kids — one of my favorite leadership experiences.
In high school at Blair Academy, I played soccer, swam, and rowed, eventually being recruited for both rowing and swimming in college. I chose swimming and attended Clark University, one of the few entrepreneurship-focused schools in the U.S. There, I specialized as a sprint swimmer and took on a senior-year capstone project that required launching a business in just four months — a challenge that lit a fire in me.
After graduating in 2012, I moved to China to learn international business firsthand. I lived in Shanghai for three years, learned Mandarin, and traveled extensively across Asia. While there, I served as a digital marketing director at italki and worked as an analyst for the largest angel investment group in China.
Since returning to the U.S. in 2016, I’ve bootstrapped and scaled multiple ventures. I grew three e-commerce brands to over $1 million in revenue — all of which were acquired. I launched a YouTube channel in 2018 to share what I’d learned selling on Amazon and created courses that helped others build FBA businesses. In 2020, I launched a PPE company during COVID, generating $1.3M in sales in just 30 days. That same year, I bought my first multi-unit property to break into real estate.
But my heart pulled me back to software. I’d seen firsthand how powerful word-of-mouth and referrals could be, so when I discovered ReferralHero, it clicked. In 2021, I acquired the company. Since then, we’ve 5x’d our monthly recurring revenue and doubled our customer base — helping businesses of all sizes grow through simple, effective referral programs.
When I’m not working, you’ll probably find me working out (I did CrossFit for seven years and now stick to a HIIT routine), reading business books, or soaking up life in Southern California.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like most entrepreneurs, I’ve faced my share of setbacks, detours, and moments of serious doubt.
Early on, I chose to bootstrap rather than raise capital, which meant living with my parents for three years while getting my first real business off the ground. It was humbling. I was in my mid to late twenties, watching peers climb corporate ladders while I juggled side hustles, tested product ideas, and stretched every dollar to keep my runway alive long enough to find traction.
Roughly 40% of the products I launched on Amazon failed. Some campaigns underperformed. And there were moments I genuinely thought I might go bankrupt. I had to learn everything on the fly — from sourcing and logistics to customer acquisition and team management.
When COVID hit, I pivoted quickly and launched a PPE business. It exploded, generating $1.3M in the first 30 days — but scaling that fast brought its own chaos. Supply chain breakdowns, import complications, and the pressure to deliver during a global crisis tested me in every way.
Even after acquiring ReferralHero, it wasn’t plug-and-play. We had to rebuild the product, regain customer trust, and heavily invest in UX, automation, and support. More recently, I had to navigate major cash flow issues — going from burning $40,000 per month to profitability in under 90 days. Growing a SaaS business while wearing every hat has demanded relentless learning and fast, focused execution.
But those tough seasons taught me resilience, sharpened my instincts, and gave me a deeper understanding of what it really takes to build something meaningful. Looking back, I wouldn’t trade the struggle — it shaped who I am and how I lead today.
We’ve been impressed with ReferralHero, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
ReferralHero is a done-for-you referral marketing platform that helps businesses grow by turning their happiest customers into their most powerful marketers. We specialize in building and managing fully customized referral programs — so our clients don’t have to lift a finger.
What sets us apart is that we’re not just a software tool — we’re a partner. Most referral platforms leave you to figure it out on your own. We take the opposite approach. From strategy to setup to ongoing optimization, we handle it all. Whether you’re looking to increase customer referrals, app downloads, or email signups, we’ll build a program that fits your business goals and takes the workload off your team.
Our platform is built to be flexible and powerful under the hood, but we keep the experience simple for our customers. No complex setup. No guessing. Just results.
We’ve powered over 30 million referrals for brands across industries — from fast-growing startups to well-established enterprises. Whether we’re supporting a local med spa or a cutting-edge AI company, our focus remains the same: driving real, measurable growth through word-of-mouth.
What I’m most proud of is how human we’ve kept the brand. We’re bootstrapped, profitable, and obsessed with customer success. We don’t just give you software — we give you a team that cares, listens, and knows how to build referral engines that actually work.
If there’s one thing I’d want your readers to know, it’s this: we take the guesswork out of referral marketing. If your business relies on referrals — or should — we’re here to help you grow without adding more to your plate.
