Inspiring Conversations with Carey Fox of Flour Fox & Cocoa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carey Fox.

Hi Carey, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started Flour Fox & Cocoa because I had spent many years working in restaurants and cafes in different roles, and in each of those jobs the underlying thought was always: How would I do this if this were mine? I have always wanted to have my own business and a lot of that drive comes from wanting to create systems that I know are better. In every job — from barista, to waitress, then line cook, to pastry chef — I knew that I would one day take my passion for hospitality and my experience and create a business. Flour Fox & Cocoa is driven by my values. In every offering our clients are receiving the best hospitality and a team that is striving for excellent products, and we are doing it in a way that is challenging the capitalist nature that makes the hospitality industry so hard to love.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It took me many years to understand what I truly wanted, so my timing has always felt a little off. I left restaurants at one point to pursue a career in Social Work, and in that time I found that what I really wanted was to cook. But when I went back to hospitality and culinary school, I was also getting married and trying to start a family. It would have been great to devote more years to what I am passionate about before having children – but like everything, time is finite, and you just have to try to fit it all in in this one lifetime. It’s hard to be the mom and wife I would like to be while also pursuing the things I love to do professionally.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Flour Fox & Cocoa?
We provide culinary experiences, which is to say there are a lot of different offerings all under the same values. We curate private cooking classes and parties, as well as community cooking classes. We have beautiful dessert spreads available for special events. Custom cakes and desserts can be made to accommodate any dietary needs. And you can find us popping up whenever possible with a changing menu of seasonal sweet and savory tarts and cakes.

As a local business I am most proud that we are community centered. We are careful to pay everyone on our team above what the market considers their value to be. Collaborating with small businesses whenever possible is something we prioritize. We are shopping locally with our farmers, you will see me almost every Wednesday shopping for supplies at the Carlsbad Farmers Market. We are conscious about the waste we add to the world, and strive to reduce our garbage production, using compostable single-use products when needed.

I think it is important that people know we appreciate when folks are thoughtful with how they spend their money, and in turn we are very thoughtful with how we spend our money and resources within our community.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
You can hire us to host a fun cooking class or private event, or our catering services as a sweet addition to your special occasion.

Additionally we would love to partner with small businesses that want to host classes, carry our products, or invite us to pop – up at their events. We are interested in collaborating with food producers and farmers as well.
