Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Chan.
Hi Amanda, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started blossomsnvine originally as a hobby. I’ve always found myself a big fan of floral arrangement and found it therapeutic. As a full time engineer in a STEM field, I am always finding a way to express myself in creative outlets and getting me away from screen time. I will be honest, it was an impulse decision to start it as a business, and I am still finding myself learning new things every single day.
As a child, I always looked up to those with an entrepreneur spirit, and I thought to myself — why not me? This thought process of “why not” has brought me so many great memories thus far in life, and I try to encompass this mentality in most decisions that bring me anxiety.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road thus far. Figuring out logistics, along with the marketing/business side of turning a hobby into a small business was and is no easy feat. My biggest hurdle I am still trying to figure out is to gauge the amount of flower inventory I need when building certain size bouquets, along with how to manage the loss if my left over flowers do not sell.
An additional hurdle is that since I have no training, content creation and editing takes me much longer than I would assume businesses with actual marketing/content creating personnel would take.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a home-based florist, specializing in making custom flower bouquets and arrangements. My bouquet style definitely leans more towards the styles that you would see in Asian countries (Korea, Taiwan, Japan, etc) which focus more on balanced bouquets with pastel colors.
I am most proud of the amount of skills I’ve learned in such a short amount of time. I’ve only started actually flowering seriously starting this May 2025, and I’ve already partaken in 2 pop ups thus far. I am also most proud of stepping outside of my comfort zone and marketing myself– it takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there and reach organically to other small businesses asking to host pop-ups, and just that process alone and securing those deals has made me very proud.
What sets me apart from other florists I feel is my determination and personability, as well as my flower style. I have not seen many florists really dive into that sort of aesthetic and I think that really drives me separately in today’s market as an AAPI creative.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Risk taking as a small business owner is inevitable — starting a business is already a risk within itself! While I haven’t reached the point of quitting my full time job and taking that major risk, I have taken smaller ones that have made a huge impact to my business.
In order for me to build a name for blossomsnvine I knew I needed to get my name out there, and that first leap was to gain a following, organically –that means hitting the pavement and showing the world who I was and what I could do.
By knowing this, I took the risk of reaching out to multiple local small businesses in my area asking for a collaboration.
I was turned town a few times, but my biggest break was when Sweetvibe SD said yes, that really skyrocketed my reach and I am forever grateful for that risk I took with messaging small businesses.
