Hi Sohaila, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I first discovered belly dance at the age of 12 and was instantly captivated by its beauty, strength, and cultural richness. What began as curiosity turned into a world-class career—performing from Los Angeles to Egypt, pioneering belly dance in Mexico City in 1984, and becoming one of the most sought-after choreographers in the field. I went on to serve as a professor of belly dance, teaching and preserving the art while infusing my own creative style.
I also founded NewVo® Fitness—a trademarked program that takes fitness enthusiasts on a 45-minute journey around the world through diverse dance genres and global music, all underpinned with empowering belly dance moves. In addition, I created The Sense-ual Woman®, a transformational program and retreat series helping women reconnect with their sensual power, confidence, and joy.
Today, along with my artistic and wellness ventures, I’m a seasoned real estate agent. Just as I choreograph a breathtaking performance, I guide clients through buying or selling homes with creativity, precision, and care—helping them step into the next beautiful chapter of their lives.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. My career took me across the globe, often traveling alone as a woman in many male-dominated, traditional countries where cultural norms were vastly different from my own. Navigating those environments required resilience, cultural sensitivity, and a strong sense of self. There were moments of isolation and challenges to my safety and freedom, but those experiences shaped my confidence, deepened my understanding of the world, and strengthened my mission to empower others—especially women—to stand tall and own their space.

My work spans the worlds of dance, fitness, women’s empowerment, and real estate—all connected by a passion for helping people transform their lives. I’m known internationally for my belly dance expertise, my ability to create captivating choreography, and for pioneering programs that inspire confidence and connection. I also created The Sense-ual Woman, a transformational program and retreat series that empowers women to reclaim their sensual power through movement and the five senses. As a real estate agent, I bring that same creativity, attention to detail, and dedication to helping clients find the perfect home. I’m most proud of the lasting impact I’ve had—whether it’s a dancer taking the stage for the first time, a woman rediscovering her confidence, or a family stepping into their dream home. What sets me apart is my unique blend of artistry, business acumen, and the heart I put into everything I do.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Honestly, my favorite resources are my own creations. I’ve written five books on the artistic side of belly dance and produced a series of DVDs sharing my style and techniques—they’re like little time capsules of my journey and creativity. I still go back to them for inspiration. I also really enjoy listening to Suze Orman. She’s so passionate about helping women take control of their finances, and that energy motivates me to keep empowering women not just in movement and self-expression, but in building their independence in all areas of life.
