Today we’d like to introduce you to Rocky Somo.
Hi Rocky, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started boxing at my cousin / manager Alan Yalda’s gym in spring valley called RSD BOXING 11+ years ago. I didn’t know what I was getting into but I loved it once I threw my first punch. I felt powerful and loved the family environment. My coach Terry “ Hitman “ Hendricks taught me so much about boxing and I just became addicted to it. I trained and studied all the time and little by little improved. Then went into the amateurs and dominated and from there Alan started managing me at a professional level which has been successful now at 9-0 undefeated with a jump in the welterweight ranking ( 173rd in the world ) we are also planning to fight 4 more times by the end of the year and just closed a huge partnership with Jamul casino. So thank god everything’s been a blessing so far.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Boxing is a very challenging sport , especially when you become a pro. There’s many obstacles to deal with. The elevation of training and diet alone is a struggle. Add to that , getting an event , an opponent, selling tickets , marketing , sponsorships , travel , specialized coaching , studying and learning daily the deep ends and the chess matches of boxing all while working a full time job is very challenging but It gives me a purpose in life. If you have a purpose in life then that’s truly living. That can get you excited about doing the hard stuff and makes everything bearable.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a professional undefeated boxer representing San Diego and my Chaldean people from Iraq. I have a strong faith in god and very close to my family. I train 2-3 times daily while working full time at my daily business. I have such a love and passion for the sport of boxing that I train daily no matter what the circumstances even after a long hard day at work I train because I want to be great , I want to make my parents proud , my family proud and my Chaldean community proud. I have a strong faith in Christ and pray after every workout for him to guide me and show me his path for me
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
