We recently had the chance to connect with Liz Detrow and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Liz, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
People think grip socks are just a cute accessory for Pilates, but they’re actually a performance tool. I designed Ace Grip Socks to feel good, look cute, and improve your workout! The balance of function and style is what makes Ace different.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Liz, the founder of Ace Grip Socks. I started the brand out of my love for Pilates. I was taking classes almost every day and always wore grip socks. With my background in design and fashion, I realized how much more I enjoyed class when I had on a high-quality pair. That inspired me to create socks that are cute and fun but also durable and elevated, something people would truly love wearing in their workouts.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
Honestly, running my own business has been my biggest teacher. I launched my first clothing brand, ilysmkinda, at 19 with zero experience, and figuring things out on my own taught me the true meaning of hard work and persistence. Starting a business at that age meant learning through trial and error, tackling real challenges, and stepping into every role myself.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, many times. I’ve definitely felt burnt out and questioned whether it was worth it, but I had already invested so much that walking away never felt right. Pushing through those moments taught me the most and made me stronger.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
I believe that the energy you bring into something shows up in the outcome, even if you can’t measure it. When you create with genuine passion and intention, people can feel it, whether it’s a brand, a product, or simply how you show up in a room.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What will you regret not doing?
Not taking bigger risks while I’m still young enough to bounce back quickly. This is the time to experiment, make mistakes and learn what works for you without having too much to lose.
