Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Stern.
Hi Heather , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The San Diego Astrological Society ( SDAS) was officially founded on Friday, April 5, 1974, in San Diego, California. Since its inception, the Society has been dedicated to advancing the understanding and appreciation of astrology as both an art and a science. Our core mission is to promote astrology through education, scholarly research, and the open dissemination of knowledge to the public. We believe that through increased awareness and accessible information, individuals can gain a deeper insight into the fundamental principles and purpose of astrology, and how it can be applied meaningfully in daily life.
In addition to education and outreach, the Society places a strong emphasis on ethical practice within the field. We strive to uphold and promote high standards of integrity and professionalism among astrologers, encouraging responsible interpretation and application of astrological knowledge. One of our ongoing goals is to elevate the standard of practice within the astrological community, ensuring it is approached with respect, thoughtfulness, and accuracy.
Equally important to our mission is the cultivation of a sense of unity and mutual support among astrologers, whether they are professionals, students, or enthusiasts. By fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment, we aim to create a vibrant community where diverse astrological perspectives can be explored, shared, and respected.
Over the decades, the San Diego Astrological Society has served as a hub for learning, connection, and inspiration, and we continue to honor that legacy by adapting to the evolving needs and interests of the astrological community.
My name is Heather Stern, and I currently serve as the President of the San Diego Astrological Society. Alongside me, a dedicated team of seven board members helps keep SDAS running smoothly. Each of us brings our unique skills, perspectives, and most importantly a deep love for astrology. It’s that shared passion that drives everything we do, from organizing events to building community and keeping the spirit of SDAS alive and thriving.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like many organizations, both businesses and non-profits the San Diego Astrological Society (SDAS) was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. For nearly two years, from early 2020 until 2022, we were unable to hold our regular in-person monthly meetings, where members and guests traditionally gather to learn from experienced astrologers in a face-to-face setting. The disruption not only paused our community engagement but also made it even more evident how many people in the San Diego area are still unaware of our presence, despite the fact that SDAS has been an active organization for over 51 years.
As astrology has experienced a major resurgence in popularity over the past decade, we see a unique and exciting opportunity to welcome new participants into our community. However, one of our biggest challenges remains visibility, letting the broader local audience know that SDAS exists and continues to offer valuable, educational, and community-centered programming.
Each year, we host an Annual Bazaar, which serves as our primary fundraising event. This celebration brings together local astrologers, tarot readers, energy healers , and community for a day of learning, connection, and fun. It’s not only a vital source of financial support for SDAS but also a wonderful opportunity for outreach. We would love to see this event grow in attendance and impact—and we welcome all who are curious about astrology or seeking a community rooted in wisdom, growth, and shared exploration.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At the San Diego Astrological Society (SDAS), we are a fully volunteer run non-profit organization. Our team is made up of dedicated individuals who balance careers, family life, education, and their astrological practice. We are mothers, students, professionals, and lifelong learners who come together through our shared passion for astrology. There is currently 8 board members who serve SDAS and we all have our unique way of interpreting astrology. Among our board members at SDAS, you’ll find a diverse range of astrological backgrounds and approaches. Some of us practice traditional Western astrology, while others incorporate modalities such as Tarot, Evolutionary Astrology, or Vedic (Jyotish) Astrology. This variety reflects the richness of the astrological world and allows us to learn from one another while honoring the many paths that lead to deeper insight and understanding.
Each month, SDAS offers the community a public lecture led by an experienced astrologer, covering a unique topic related to astrology. These educational events take place on the second Friday of every month at our regular meeting space: 3900 Vermont St, San Diego, CA 92103, located in the heart of Hillcrest.
We’re also excited to announce that we’re currently working on expanding our offerings to include in-depth workshops in the near future providing even more opportunities for hands-on learning and deeper exploration of astrological practices.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
At SDAS, we’re committed to creating a space where astrologers, both seasoned professionals and those just beginning their journey can come together to learn, share, and grow. Each month, we invite experienced astrologers to present lectures to our community, offering valuable insights and education to both our members and guests. These events not only foster learning but also serve as a platform for connection and inspiration.
We’re also actively expanding our efforts to network with local businesses, practitioners, and spiritual communities throughout San Diego. Our goal is to create collaborative partnerships that promote mutual growth and visibility. In addition, we’re passionate about cultivating mentorship opportunities within our organization, where newer astrologers can learn from those with years of experience helping to strengthen the future of astrology through community support and shared wisdom.
