Life & Work with Luis Madrid of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Madrid.

Hi Luis, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Very long story, in a short paragraph… my mom moved back to mexico when I was 17, stayed with my dad till we got evicted during my Junior year in HS, my dad stated that he will be back and didn’t return till a year or so later, I did random jobs and worked as a barista at a coffee shop in coronado that I ended up buying when I was 20 (long story) Then joined a restaurant group while I owned my own business as well, until I new owners of the block came in during 2019 and in January of 2020 I was kicked out. The owner of BBH which was the restaurant company that I worked for since 2001 decided to help me out by selling me Lil Piggys BBQ and Coronado Coffee Company, fun story I ended up taking over the first day of COVID, Monday March 16th 2020. We worked hard to keep both locations open I was running back and forth.. Covid year was the best year the two locations had and we have grown every year.. I started with 10 employees and now we have over 30.. We are all so happy how much exposure we have received and such most positive feedback.. hence we are more than excited about our new adventure in Point Loma..

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
So many struggles, my dad stole my identity which made it impossible to get any loans, hence I worked hard for everything I have, my dad is a huge impact in my life unfortunately not in a positive way but was able to excel regarding my challenges, … definitely something that we can chat more about..

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have been a barista since I was 15 and worked in the hospitality industry since I was 20, I have been all over the spectrum in the hospitality industry, from managing restaurants, managing GM’s, accounting and project manager.

How do you think about luck?
I honestly don’t believe in luck, it is hard work and faith.. I have never been dealt easy cards, it is always a challenge and I try my best to meet the challenge head on
