Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Chad Yarvitz of Mission Valley

Chad Yarvitz shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Chad, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What battle are you avoiding?
I’m avoiding the battle of my degenerating left hip! A lot of years. A lot of miles. A lot of wear and tear. This body doesn’t hold up like it used to as I’m pushing 40, haha. I need to practice what I preach to all of our members, however, and get the MRI I’ve been dodging.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m the President of Xplicit Fitness, LLC. We are a boxing + strength studio here in San Diego, and have been in business since 2010. I’ve been in the fitness industry since 2006 and am a former California Golden Glove champion and professional boxer.

As a lifelong athlete who wasn’t a huge fan of traditional school, it’s no surprise I landed here. My favorite subject in school was recess, and I was allergic to any regular job environment. Creating a successful fitness and fun focused business that didn’t feel like work and incorporated my passion for boxing is the result of that recipe.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My Dad. His love for me has always been unconditional. I’ve wanted to quit at various stages in my life, in football, boxing, business, etc. He would always Tell me that I’m capable of anything I decide I want to do. One time in particular, I got my nose shattered in an amateur fight and on the ride home I was complaining that boxing was over for me. He calmly reminded me that my nose was on the front of my face, and this was boxing. I could either use that as an excuse to quit, or get a bag of ice and become a better fighter that doesn’t get hit like that again. We got the ice.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
At 13 I developed two stress fractures in my lumbar vertebrae. The doctors said I need spinal fusion surgery and would never play sports again. It turned my whole world upside down because I identified as an athlete and had big dreams. This sparked my career. I immediately started learning anything and everything I could about my injury, strengthening my body (especially the core), and refused to accept that I would need my spine fused. Becoming sedentary and giving up sports/exercise simply wasn’t an option. While my back injury is lifelong, it doesn’t own me. Instead, it’s given me the education and confidence to help anyone with any limitation find success in their mental and physical health journey.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
The “smartest” people often identify so strongly with their education, accolades, and degrees, that they lose touch with intuition and the ancient wisdom that exists in all of us. Quieting the mind to a point of deep harmony is a simple, yet extremely difficult practice. Many scoff at spirituality while choosing an identity of being right, having all the answers, and fitting in to one tribe or another. Sadly, the majority of those smarties never find freedom in this great mystery we call life.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
What a beautiful question. The answer is, everything.

When the ego can die to that point of forgetting your name, leaving your physical body, and dissociating with everything you ever knew, something life changing happens; an instant and complete connection to the entire universe occurs, where the concept of being separate is seen for the illusion that it is.
