Story & Lesson Highlights with Laura Green of Imperial Beach

We recently had the chance to connect with Laura Green and have shared our conversation below.

Laura, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day is waking up around 4 AM and getting out to my garage studio. I turn on the music and start the coffee, and then try not to dawdle and start painting. I have a number of canvases I have started and all my compositions are made on my iPad. I use those images and work on a number of pieces at once that are around the same stage, My kids wake up around 730 AM and then I dont really have time to paint again until the next day. They are homeschooled so I am either doing their schooling, making food and cleaning up, reading to them or driving them to their classes and activities.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Im a San Diego-based acrylic painter and my work explores the connections in the California ecosystem—plants, animals, and people. I am inspired by our family hikes from mountains to coast, My paintings are characterized by vibrant color palettes and expressive, loose brushwork that capture the energy and emotion of wild spaces.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My relationship with my children taught me a lot about responsibility, and not giving up. Being a parent is tough work, and you have to keep showing up even when you may be tired or exhausted. Ive faced how I was raised and some of the emotional wounds I received in order to not pass those along. I also think that I would like to be a perfect parent and never make mistakes, but that is not a reality. Being more forgiving to myself and others is something that I have learned. In many ways, I feel I had a chance to be a new person as a parent, and sometimes I think of people I used to know who probably would not really recognize me as the person I am today.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The feeling of not being good enough has plagued me for alot of my life. I think as an artist this is very common because there is constant rejection. As a child of divorced parents, I went back and forth between two different households. Both parents remarried and moved on with their lives, and I often felt I did not belong. I did not feel wanted in the new lives that my parents remade for themselves. It can be hard to keep putting myself out there as an artist, and at times the fear of being rejected gets to be alot.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The art world makes it seem like talent and skill are enough to be noticed. But I have seen time and time again, it’s not enough to be talented or skilled. Many artists seem quite successful without as much talent or skill as another artist who is basically in the shadows.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would get off my phone and stop distracting myself on social media. I would travel as most people would. I wouldn’t worry about the pretend world thats online and just be with my kids, and be present. That is very hard.
