Rising Stars: Meet Jessica McManus of Clairemont

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica McManus.

Hi Jessica , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am originally from Michigan, metro Detroit area a pretty small town. I’ve spent 18 years perfecting the craft of baking and decorating . Ive worked in a wide variety of kitchens, from donut shops, to 5 star restaurants and Casinos and ice cream shops. I decided it was time to start my own business during COVID, That’s when I opened a cottage kitchen. We were renovating our kitchen at the same time and decided to go commercial with the appliances so I could do high volume baking as well as custom cakes. It started slow but over the years I’ve grown my customer base by word of mouth in the community. Facebook neighborhood pages with friends plugging my business page every chance they got. I’ve gained repeat clients like Republic Waste service, they continue to support my small business for 3 years now and love my custom printed sugar cookies. I’ve grown into a recognized brand in the neighborhood and it’s so great being a part of someone’s celebration. I’ve recently started in the past year added my Ice Cream Bike to my services which has been so fun to be an actual part of the party while watching people enjoy my desserts.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some struggles have been learning the ins and outs of owning a business, learning what permits or licenses or certifications I need. Sometimes it felt like I could never finish because there would always be another permit Id need. The baking side has always came easy to me I can do that with my eyes closed.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I do what I consider the small stuff, cookies, cupcakes, cake pops…. But what sets me apart is I can make an edible cake look like a show stopper. These aren’t your typical birthday cakes you’ll see at your local store. My cakes are sculpted works of art: not only do they look amazing they taste even better. I use high quality ingredients and make from scratch.
