We’re looking forward to introducing you to Irina Ovchinnikov. Check out our conversation below.
Irina, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: When was the last time you felt true joy?
The last time I felt true joy was when I received a heartfelt 5-star review from one of my clients after her daughter’s senior session in Carlsbad. She wrote about how magical the beach sunset felt, how smoothly everything went, and how the final images brought tears to her eyes.
Reading her words — “Irina has an incredible eye and a gift for making special moments unforgettable” — filled me with pure gratitude. It reminded me why I love what I do: capturing genuine emotion, helping people see their own beauty, and creating memories that families will treasure forever.
That moment was joy in its truest form — quiet, meaningful, and deeply fulfilling.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Irina, the photographer and creative behind Carlsbad Photo — a boutique photography brand based in sunny Carlsbad, California. I specialize in capturing weddings, families, and life’s in-between moments with a mix of artistry, emotion, and genuine connection.
My photography journey started years ago with a film camera my father gave me, and it’s grown into a full-time passion for telling love stories and preserving family memories that feel real. What makes Carlsbad Photo unique is the personal touch behind every session — I get to know my clients, their stories, and what makes them light up, so their images reflect them authentically.
I’ve been lucky to photograph everything from ocean-view weddings and golden-hour family sessions to multi-day celebrations filled with laughter, tears, and champagne toasts. My clients often tell me it feels like having a trusted friend behind the camera — someone who anticipates the moments before they happen.
Right now, I’m working on expanding my team of talented photographers and videographers to bring even more creative energy to our weddings and events across Southern California (and occasionally beyond!).
At its heart, Carlsbad Photo is about connection, storytelling, and turning fleeting moments into forever keepsakes — all with warmth, artistry, and a genuine love for people.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who I had to be, I was endlessly curious — the kind of kid who looked up at the stars and dreamed of becoming an astronaut, chasing the unknown. Then I became fascinated by human stories and mysteries, imagining myself as a crime scene specialist, uncovering hidden truths.
But life has a way of leading you where you’re meant to go. My curiosity evolved into creativity — first through art school, where I learned to see the world in light, texture, and emotion, and later through journalism, where I learned the power of storytelling and connection.
All those paths — the dreamer, the investigator, the artist, the storyteller — eventually merged into who I am today: a photographer who still chases light, searches for truth, and tells stories through images that speak without words.
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
What’s something I changed my mind about after failing hard?
That failure means you’re done.
I used to see failure as an ending — a sign that maybe I wasn’t good enough or that I’d chosen the wrong path. But after every fall, I learned that the real strength is in how quickly you stand back up. Each setback became a turning point — a chance to regroup, reinvent, and change strategy.
Now, I see failure as feedback. It’s a powerful teacher that strips away ego, sharpens focus, and often leads to the kind of growth success never could.
Every time I’ve “failed hard,” I’ve ended up discovering a better version of myself — stronger, wiser, and far more creative.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
A belief I used to hold tightly — and now realize was naive — is that hard work alone guarantees success.
For a long time, I thought if I just pushed harder, worked longer, and gave everything my all, things would automatically fall into place. But life and business have taught me that success isn’t just about effort — it’s about alignment, timing, mindset, and sometimes letting go.
You can do everything “right” and still hit walls. What truly matters is learning to pivot, stay grounded in your “why,” and keep showing up with heart — not just hustle.
Now I believe success is less about proving yourself and more about becoming yourself — doing what feels true, meaningful, and sustainable. That shift changed everything for me.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m surrounded by nature — especially near the ocean at sunrise or sunset. There’s something about the sound of waves, the salt in the air, and the ever-changing light that brings me back to center.
In those moments, I’m not thinking about deadlines, editing queues, or to-do lists — I’m simply present. Camera or not, I feel connected to something bigger than myself.
That same sense of peace also finds me when I’m behind the lens, quietly observing life unfold — a laugh between loved ones, a breeze catching a veil, golden light wrapping around a family. It’s in those still, beautiful pauses that I remember why I do what I do — to hold on to the feeling of peace, love, and gratitude that photography so perfectly captures.
