Rising Stars: Meet Nina Goldstein of La Jolla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Goldstein.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Taught middle school Spanish and French for 29 years, but all my life I really wanted to play piano in a bar! So at age 82 I did just that! I got the gig last August, and I’m still loving it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Fighting my own fraud syndrome–if I’m not the Modern Jazz Quintet or Erroll Garner, where’s my spot in the musician’s gallery? Do “Desperado” and “Walking in Memphis” count in the music Olympics?

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I play piano every Wednesday night at Vigilucci’s Trattoria in Encinitas, and volunteer as Scripps Green Hospital’s Monday piano player. I am also a freelance writer who had many magazine and newspaper articles published including at Family Circle and Reader’s Digest.

How do you think about luck?
So much good luck! The piano gig I targeted needed a player!
