An Inspired Chat with Alberto Mendoza of Oceanside

Alberto Mendoza shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Alberto, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Spending time with my 8-month-old daughter.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Alberto Mendoza, and I run a video production company called Alberto Visuals. I’ve been doing this for about eight years now. I actually got into this world by accident after seeing a GoPro commercial back in 2012. I was already really into traveling, and seeing those kinds of moments captured on video made me want to try it myself. I bought my first camera soon after, started filming everything I could, and it just grew from there. The passion for filming was so organic, and I love that I got into this space before the big content creation boom we’ve seen over the last few years. It’s been cool to grow with the industry while still keeping that same excitement I had when I first started.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I used to believe I needed a traditional job to make a living. I actually dropped out of school twice because I just couldn’t connect with what I was studying. Deep down, I knew I wasn’t meant for the typical 9-to-5 path. It’s no knock on anyone who does, but I always felt like I was meant to do something more creative and impactful. Now I get to document stories and connect with people through my work behind the camera, and that’s something I’m really proud of.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Not at all. I’ve always had a positive mindset and trusted that I’d figure it out somehow. Even when things get tough, I know I’m going to find a way through it. I never had a big five-year plan like some people do; I’ve always just focused on what’s in front of me. I really believe in momentum and staying consistent. As long as I keep working and moving forward, things tend to fall into place. Every so often, when I pause and look back, I realize how far I’ve come and how much I’ve accomplished. It’s a great feeling.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think one of the biggest lies in this industry is that you need a big team to be successful. I work with corporate clients, but for the most part, I’m a one-man band and handle about 90% of my projects on my own. I’ve tried working with multiple editors in the past, but it never really clicked. When it makes sense, I subcontract local creatives I trust, but overall, I’ve found that staying lean lets me move faster, stay creative, and maintain full control of the final product.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
I guess when I finish a project I was really looking forward to, I often find myself immediately excited for the next one without fully taking in what I just accomplished. It’s like I’m always chasing the next challenge, which keeps me moving forward, but sometimes I have to remind myself to pause and appreciate what I’ve done.
