We’re looking forward to introducing you to Alex Dewart. Check out our conversation below.
Alex, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My community brings me so much joy. I’ve become friends with my neighbors who hand out fruit from their trees, the shop owners on our corner, the people I surf with every morning before work. Feeling connected to the people who live around me makes me feel so at home and I’m grateful for the openness and warmth that is reciprocated.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a small event florist business owner located in North County San Diego. I fell into floristry back in 2020, when I started working for Celia Bartholomew, my mentor and the creator of Flit. I worked under her for 3 years, and then in 2024 she was so generous to sell me the business. I have been enjoying the last year or so of honing my personal style alongside learning the back of house of a business. It’s been a great challenge for me and I welcome it.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My aunt. She always knew I would work in art, but she never tried to push it on me. I didn’t realize I had it in me, but she kept art in my life and fueled my inspiration.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell her that being an artist can look however she wants it to look.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that the things that really matter to me are: eating well with the people I love, feeling connected to my community, prioritizing time for creative outlets, and treating people with respect and empathy.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What will you regret not doing?
I would regret not putting my all into this business. I have gained so much experience and confidence from running a small business business and I owe it to myself to see it through and put my heart into it. And I’m excited to!
