Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Julio Brionez of Hillcrest

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Julio Brionez. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Julio, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Have you stood up for someone when it cost you something?
In the recent past, I left a position due to moral conflicts with its policies. The costs have been professional, as that location is likely no longer a reference; personal, as I have lost contact with co-workers whom I loved; and physical and mental, as standing up (to leave) can be a lonely place and recovery takes time.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Julio, friends call me whoolee, or Juli. I am a psychologist by trade, work by day in a university counseling center, and by night and by appointment with Unapologetic Psychology. Throughout my time, I learned that work is real; it is how we leave our mark. Now, as a maturing adult, I realize that work does not stop in the office; work is caring for friends, relatives, and ourselves. Sometimes the care is hard work, sometimes it is easy.

Nevertheless, it is always work. You may read this and think I am complaining, yet work is where I get to spend my time. Time is all we have, and unfortunately, it is finite, so getting to spend time doing things I love with people I love is a privilege that comes at a cost. That cost can be health, financial, and spiritual. What leads me to think I am unique is that I recognize everyone pays a cost for their life, and it is my job to learn their costs and how they may need assistance in healing from them.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That I am a lazy, aimless, fat boy.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
“You are going to be great, just lead with the same kindness you want.”

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I admire my younger brother. He continues to live a well life, and communicates well through his actions. I admire him because he is honest, has integrity, and understands, in my opinion, who he is, who he loves, and who he values.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What pain do you resist facing directly?
Slowing down, doing less.
