Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Maureen Martin of San Diego

We recently had the chance to connect with Maureen Martin and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Maureen, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
If I were buying a home or doing a refinance, I’d absolutely hire me. My clients describe me as organized, proactive, and genuinely caring, someone who plans ahead, explains every step clearly, and finds creative solutions where others can’t. I take pride in being honest, responsive, and making complex situations feel simple, constantly striving to close loans smoothly and even ahead of schedule. With over two and a half decades of experience and deep local expertise, I combine precision with compassion to make the process as stress free and transparent as humanly possible. My goal is always the same: to be a trusted, ethical partner who helps my clients turn their homeownership dreams into reality. I also pride myself on being aligned with banks that offer competitively low rates and fair turn around times. All in all, I take so much pride in what I do, and care deeply about the customers overall experience and satisfaction.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Maureen Martin, I am a San Diego based mortgage broker with over two and a half decades of experience as a loan originator. I take pride in helping clients turn their homeownership dreams into reality. I’m passionate about simplifying the mortgage process and making it feel human, not transactional. My approach is proactive, transparent, and I always put my clients first. I plan ahead to avoid surprises, go over and above to set realistic expectations to avoid surprises or disappointment, do my very best to explain every step clearly, and find creative solutions even with complex or unconventional scenarios.

My business through the years was built on communication, hard work and creative ideas to serve my clients. What makes me special is that I’m truly personal. I don’t just hand you off to a team, I AM the team! I’ve spent years building long term relationships with realtors, and families across San Diego, many of whom return to me for all of their financing for years to follow. I take pride in being a steady, available, reliable partner who combines precision with compassion. I’m always focused on educational content and resources to help more homeowners and buyers feel confident about one of life’s biggest financial decisions. I always say, it’s not just a loan, it’s an experience!

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My parents. They were two of the hardest working people I’ve ever known. My mother was a full time teacher, teaching was her calling. And my father was a natural entrepreneur who thrived in sales. Over the years he sold pharmaceuticals, encyclopedias, watches, and even owned and operated several laundromats. There were many years when my mother worked seven days a week: five in the classroom and two helping my father with his businesses.

From the start, I grew up surrounded by that level of dedication. Their example molded me into the passionate, driven, and relentless worker I am today. Why work with me? Because I don’t quit. I don’t take no for an answer. I don’t take off on vacation in the middle of your transaction because I care deeply about getting your loan closed. My clients’ priorities always come first. And if anyone has ever done a loan, they likely know that these banks are tough to deal with. They ask for the moon even if it makes no sense. So to have someone like myself who knows the guidelines and the work arounds, and who will fight to remove conditions that don’t make sense, is exactly what you want when you’re getting a mortgage.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely. There have been many moments in this business that have tested me to my core.

Every loan comes with its own unique set of challenges. From clients shopping me for rates without fully understanding the value I bring, to appraisers coming in low or requiring questionable repairs, to underwriters requesting conditions that feel nearly impossible to satisfy, there’s no shortage of hurdles. Title reports can uncover unexpected issues that must be cleared before closing, and agents sometimes include contingency periods in the contracts that, while intended to get the deal accepted, create intense time pressure for everyone involved, especially me. Then there are the occasional wire delays through the Federal Reserve, or clients who refinance or sell their homes before the Early Payoff (EPO) period ends, which wipes out my entire commission through no fault of my own. Being a mortgage broker isn’t just demanding, it’s often exhausting and, at times, defeating. There are days when it feels like I’m fighting uphill on every front: lenders, appraisers, underwriters, timelines, and even technology.

But the truth is, I can’t imagine not doing this work. I can’t imagine not helping people secure the homes and futures they’ve dreamed of. I can’t imagine not being part of this community, serving as a steady, honest advocate for financial health, wealth, and freedom.

So yes, there are moments when I feel like giving up. But then I remember my WHY……my clients, their families, and the lives changed through homeownership. That’s what keeps me moving forward, no matter how tough it gets.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
They get too greedy.

To me, success in this business is actually simple. All it takes is offering exceptional service at a fair price. That’s it. There’s no need for gimmicks, complicated sales tactics, or a song and dance.

If you have genuine intentions, deep knowledge of your craft, clear communication, and a true commitment to quality, people will trust you and stay with you. In an industry that sometimes loses sight of integrity, I believe doing the right thing consistently is what sets me apart.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I retired tomorrow, I think my clients would miss the level of dedication and personal connection I bring to every transaction. I’m deeply involved from beginning to end ,not just as a loan officer, but as a true partner. My clients know that I care about their goals as much as they do, and that I’ll do whatever it takes to get their loan closed smoothly and on time. That kind of personal attention and hands-on involvement is rare, and it’s something I take great pride in.

They’d also miss my communication. One of the things clients mention most often is that I keep them informed every step of the way. I take the time to explain things in clear, simple terms and to anticipate challenges before they become problems. Whether it’s an underwriting condition, a title issue, or a tight deadline, I’m always one step ahead, making sure my clients feel confident and supported throughout the process.

But above all, I think they’d miss the trust. My clients know I’m honest, fair, and that I’ll always put their best interests first. In an industry that can sometimes feel transactional, I strive to make it personal, building long-term relationships grounded in integrity, consistency, and care. That combination of expertise, communication, and genuine heart is what my clients say sets me apart, and what they’d miss most if I weren’t here.
