An Inspired Chat with Yaz Reve

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Yaz Reve. Check out our conversation below.

Yaz , we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
In all honesty, there’s never a normal day for me. I enjoy having routines that bring me structure but when it comes to my work, I either have to be shooting, editing or researching aka inspiring myself by my surroundings and life. I’ll wake up and have my morning rituals: coffee and breakfast, pick up my room because “clean room is a clear mind”, go to a workout class (this depends on the time of day), run errands, go to/ have meetings, edit at home etc. I deeply love having those “normal days” where I can just focus on needs to be done. I am a Virgo so crossing something off my To-Do List for the day is simply one of my greatest pleasures and a huge reward.

In simplest terms, a normal day for Yaz Reve is full of love, life and creativity all around. Everything else might change but those always remain.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Myrna Yazeli and my artist name is Yaz Reve. I am a Photographer, Visual Artist and Creative/Art Director with a focus on creative portraits, editorials and conceptual work. I adore incorporating every aspect of art into my life and I draw inspiration from my surroundings constantly. My love for art has been present my entire life but Photography came into the picture five years ago and I have not been able to let it go. It truly feels like I found a soulmate and I can’t see myself living without creativity, photography and art. I am also what would be considered a “Content Creator” or “Influencer” offering content such as Lifestyle, Fashion and Beauty but my main focus is Creative/ Art related. I have my own series such as “I was created to create” and “Art Fuel” to invite the audience to be more creative or see life from another lens. I truly believe that my purpose on earth is to create and I believe that it is every humans purpose as well, whether we create life, technology, food etc, we are making art and I would love to remind people that by just existing and living life you are creating and crafting a life full of art.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I think I am lucky to say that my family has always been the one to see me clearly as an artist, whether it was them buying my first Van Gogh coloring book at the age of 4 or being ok with the murals I would paint all around the house, they knew who I would become and although there is a lot to be learned about the beauty and horror about being an artist, the most important part is to have people that believe in you when sometimes you can’t believe in yourself.

A special story I carry with myself about someone seeing me was about Esperanza. She was a young nun at a church I had gotten invited to when I was in middle school by my best friend at the time. There were lots of activities and all the children would be separated into groups that would be led by different nun leads, I was a part of Esperanza’s and as much as I’ve never really considered myself to be religious, I’ve always seen faith as something beautiful and pure so I decided to give this activity my all. We all had to share moments from our lives and one thing led to another so before it was my time to shine and share my part I was flooding in tears. I’ve always been a sensitive and emotional being, now I take ownership but not so much before. I was extremely embarrassed and after the activity was over, Esperanza pulled me to the side and comforted me. Then, without knowing my artistic endeavors, she told me that one day all these emotions I would use them to create beautiful things because she knew I was an artist. I’m not sure how she knew or if it really was the divine telling her but all I can say is that she was right, it is my calling and she saw me clearly before I could fully see myself.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I would lie if I said there wasn’t at least a couple of times I almost gave up. I believe as artists, the path is never linear and it’s not all beautiful or romantic. There is such a thing as the starving artist, impostor syndrome or comparison is the thief of joy that fuels the idea that we go through similar things as a collective. At times, I feel like the industry can be saturated with incredible artists with better connections or the art opportunities around me feel limited but I have to constantly remind myself that I’m pursuing my dream for a reason, I love creating and I’m never going to stop creating so therefore I can’t really give up my dream.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely. Many people can say that it might seem as though I live a very curated life but in reality I deeply enjoy living life away from social media so whatever I post is a plus. Most of the time, I live the moment, take photos and videos with my pov and then I worry about posting later because I want it to be intentional. I love living a life full of details of my favorite designers/ artists, recipes from my favorite chefs or outfits inspired by fashionable people but most importantly I want to make sure to continue to create more than what I consume so when I do I can use it as inspiration for my life and not just fill myself with a mindless consumption (I am human and I do attest to a couple of hours of scrolling too). I also never want to be seen as rude or not easy going because just as Picasso spent his entire life trying to paint again like a child, I want to spend my life gaining, finding and re-gaining my softness as a human because growing up in this world can make you very hard and harsh so i refuse to live a life without any form of kindness or sympathy. Just like a famous singer said “It takes strength to be gentle and kind” and so I wish for others to see that what I show is what they get just with a little aesthetic curation 😉

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
It’s hard to live a life that feels authentic simply because there are so many factors that might contribute but I constantly try my best to live a life I will continue to feel proud of. All I know is that i was created to create and that’s it, it’s what I was born to do, anything else will just add to it. An authentic life for myself will be full of self-expression, whatever that might mean in the moment and in all reality if I were to be doing what I was told to do I’d probably be a Doctor or Lawyer by now, not to say these are not amazing career paths with probably much more economic stability that at some point I can decide to change my route and go for them but at this time and place, they wouldn’t be the most authentic version of myself so all I keep in my heart is that I’m trying my best to do what I was born to do and what would make little Yaz Reve happy.
