We recently had the chance to connect with Dr. LuRussia Haley-Cain and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. LuRussia, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day are sacred. When I wake up, I begin with a prayer of thanksgiving expressing gratitude for the gift of a new day and breath in my body. I let worship music fill the atmosphere, setting a tone of peace and divine presence. I sip water to refresh and awaken my body, honoring it as the temple of the Holy Spirit. Then, I open my journal and pour out my thoughts, prayers, and intentions, reflecting on what God is speaking to my heart. These moments anchor me in gratitude, align me with divine purpose, and prepare me to move through the day with clarity, grace, and renewed strength.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?

My Story: Losing My Husband. Finding Hope Through Grief.
When my husband passed, my world felt like it had stopped. The pain was immediate, overwhelming and isolating. As a Life Coach and Counselor, I had guided others through loss, but nothing prepared me for facing my own.
Through the heartbreak, I learned firsthand what I teach: grief is not something to “fix,” but a journey to navigate with grace, faith, and self-compassion. leaning on God, embracing memories, and allowing myself to feel every emotion became my path toward healing.
Today, I use my experience to walk alongside others who are grieving, helping them find hope amid sorrow. My story isn’t just about loss it’s about discovering resilience, faith, and the courage to live fully even after life’s hardest moments.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My father, Dr. Larry Haley. Growing up in a family steeped in history, storytelling, and creativity with proud family ties to Alex Haley, the author of two iconic books: Roots: The Saga of an American Family and The Autobiography of Malcome X. Alex was the writer and producer for the adaptations Roots and Alex Haley’s Queen. My father taught me to value both heritage and heart, showing me how love, integrity and purpose can shape not just a family, but a life. These lessons continue to guide the woman I am today, influencing the way I lead, love and pursue my calling.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
While success often brings validation and comfort, suffering strips everything away, leaving you face-to-face with your true self. It taught me resilience, the ability to keep going when nothing feels certain. It taught me empathy, showing me the depth of others’ pain in a way that privilege or achievement never could. It taught me humility, reminding me that control is an illusion and that life’s greatest growth often comes from surrender. Most of all, suffering revealed the source of my strength and faith -“God.” Helping me find meaning and hope in ways success alone could never inspire.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Honestly, it’s part of me, but it’s not the full story. The public Dr. LuRussia is what people see in coaching sessions, on podcasts, in books, or speaking on stages. She’s strong, poised, and focused on guiding others through their pain toward hope.
But the real me, the me behind the scenes is still learning how to heal from loss, still wrestling with doubts and fears, and still navigating the quiet, messy, beautiful moments of grief and joy. I cry, I pray, I journal, I reflect and sometimes I feel completely unprepared for the calling that I have been given.
The public Dr. LuRussia is my calling. The private me is my truth. And in the space where the two meet- where faith, vulnerability, and experience converge. I find real power, purpose, and authenticity. That’s who I truly am.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
One of hope, healing, and unwavering faith. I want to be remembered as someone who poured her heart into helping others navigating their pain, who stood as a beacon of light in seasons of darkness, and who never shied away from sharing her own journey of grief and growth. I hope people remember the love I showed, the courage I modeled, I shared the Gospel with others, and the grace I extended reminding them that even in our deepest losses, transformation and purpose are possible. Most of all, I want them to tell a story of a woman who lived fully, loved deeply, and lifted others along the way.
