Madison Ludlow shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Madison , we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Becoming a mother. This July we welcomed our sweet baby boy into the world and it’s been such a joyous season of life.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I grew up in a home that was filled with antiques; furniture, art, textiles, clothing…my mother greatly influenced me at a young age to appreciate old things. Our home growing up with filled with little artifacts and pieces of history.
When I started The Ludlow Shop 5+ years ago, I was most drawn to older garments. Pieces with stories woven into each seam. I was particularly fascinated by the early 1900s Edwardian era nightwear and adored the 1940s-1960s western wear, the rugged well-worn patina leathers and old clothing tags. Most recently we’ve absolutely loved sourcing 1950-60s athletic wear, styling them into modern wardrobes. My curated vintage shop is truly everything I love. I offer true american vintage from 1900s through 1970s, with a hint of european antique clothing.
This year we’re expanding into antique furniture and art which we intend to source and sell from our home base in Oceanside.
I travel all over the US, connecting with antique dealers far and wide to offer the best selection of vintage goods. Each piece thoughtfully considered and vetted for the shop – I pride myself on the condition and quality of each garment and the experience of shopping vintage. I believe it can be luxury shopping experience.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My grandmother Mimi. I watched her as a child make her own clothing. She saw my interest for fashion and always found little things to teach me at a young age which ultimately influenced my career path.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Walk through this world unapologetically yourself.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely! I’ve always strived to maintain a very authentic relationship with all my customers and my online community. They’ve watched my business grow over the years and have supported all my wins, I have so much appreciation for the community we’ve built.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
A mother, sister, daughter and friend.
