Life & Work with Blythe of SAN DIEGO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Blythe.

Hi Blythe, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Creativity has always been a pervasive force in my life — something that’s expanded across every area of who I am. I’ve always been drawn to things that feel different or unconventional, and I think that curiosity has shaped so much of my path. I come from a background where creativity was celebrated — my parents both saw the world through unique lenses, and even though things weren’t always perfect, every experience, both good and challenging, helped mold me into the woman and creative I am today.

My father was a reggae DJ who used to make mix CDs, and my mom was always into live music and performance so music was a constant in our home. I grew up listening to everything from reggae and calypso to alternative, folk rock, electronic, and UK grime. That exposure gave me a wide lens early on. I learned that creativity doesn’t have to fit into one genre or form; it’s fluid and limitless.

I started creating on my own around the age of nine or ten when Willow Smith’s Whip My Hair came out…that moment genuinely changed my life. Seeing a girl my age touring, performing, dressing how she wanted, and speaking so confidently made me realize that creativity didn’t have to wait until adulthood. She made it feel possible. I was OBSESSED. I followed everything she did, and when she partnered with an online production software called Club Create for a remix contest, I jumped at the chance to participate. They released the stems from the original track, and that’s how I learned to make my first beat. I didn’t win, but that experience lit something in me. I realized I could build sound from scratch — that I could compose, arrange, and express myself through music.

Looking back, it all connects. When I was younger, I’d watch my older brothers use Fruity Loops to make beats and rap. They’d give me an unplugged controller when they played video games just to make me feel included. I think about that and laugh now, because years later, I’d be the one creating and taking it seriously. They’ve all moved on to different things, but every time they see what I’m doing now, they tell me how wild it is that I stuck with it.

Those early experiences taught me the power of curiosity and play. What started as a hobby became therapy, then purpose, and eventually a career path.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing about the road has been smooth, but I think that’s what gives the journey its beauty. I’ve struggled with imposter syndrome and insecurity. I’ve questioned myself so many times, wondering if this was really what I was meant to be doing. I’ve gone through seasons where I had everything and seasons where I had nothing. My family went through a major breaking point, and my mom and I ended up homeless for a period of time, living motel to motel and couch to couch while we tried to hold it together.

Every year seemed to bring some kind of loss, whether it was losing family members or letting go of parts of myself that I had outgrown. I’ve had to sacrifice relationships, comfort, time, and even moments with my family because I was trying to stay dedicated to my dream. There were times I felt like I was rebuilding my life from scratch.

But all of it taught me who I am. It forced me to grow, to stay committed, and to trust that even the hardest chapters were shaping me into the version of myself I’m becoming.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At my core I’m an artist and a music producer. I write, produce music and vocal demos constantly, whether it’s for my own projects or for other artists. I create for underground talent, I’m executive producing a tape for an artist out of Georgia, and I’m working on my own EP that feels like the most honest reflection of me so far. Beyond the studio, I curate creative experiences and events, I model, I direct visuals and I handle social media strategy when it makes sense. I love bringing ideas to life in every medium I touch.

I really am a multi hyphenate and a modern day Renaissance woman. I love art in every era and every form. Fashion, music, painting, architecture, design, visuals, graphic design — all of it inspires me in different ways. I take everything I’m drawn to and blend it into my own world. I’m not trying to be like anybody else. I’m focused on becoming the best version of myself, and I’m constantly surprised by the ideas God puts on my spirit. What sets me apart is my vision. I consider myself an alchemist because I’ve always been able to turn nothing into something. That comes from my resilience and from surviving so much at a young age. Creating beauty out of chaos kept me grounded, and it taught me how to build something meaningful out of whatever I have.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was a very stoic and shy kid. I didn’t smile much in public, but with my family I was playful and comfortable. I’ve always had a serious side, but I was also goofy once you got to know me. Before I discovered my creativity, I was obsessed with the ocean. I wanted to be a marine biologist because I loved sharks. I knew everything about them. To this day they’re still my favorite animal. They’re powerful, calm, intimidating in their own way, and I think a part of my personality mirrors that.

I was raised around a lot of boys, so whatever my brothers and cousins did, I wanted to do. They played video games, so I played video games. They discovered FL Studio when it first came out, so I would sit in my brother’s room for hours watching them make beats and freestyle. I didn’t even realize that was planting a seed in me. As I got older, I ended up doing the same thing on my own, and music never left.

I was also really into fashion. My mom worked in fashion as a merchandiser and stylist, so I grew up watching her put looks together. She and my grandmother were both very stylish, and that influenced me. I used to make clothes for my Barbies out of old socks and shirts, do their hair, and even give them cuts inspired by Rihanna and Cassie. I would add hair to give them shaved sides and make outfits for their “tours.” I would create whole rollouts for them without even realizing that’s what I was doing. I’d write songs, name their albums, decide the era, make set lists — I was about ten years old doing that. Looking back, that’s where my creative direction and world-building really started.

I also sang and danced in choir during middle school. We performed at different schools and at our own, and those were some of my favorite memories. My choir teacher was strict but he believed in us, and that helped me gain confidence even though I was shy about singing solos. Being exposed to music from different eras and regions also shaped me. I loved blog era rap, indie music, electronic, EDM, UK music, underground mixtapes — I listened to everything. I downloaded mixtapes on the computer and just lived in my own creative bubble.

All of those little interests and experiences from my childhood blended into who I am now. The curiosity, the storytelling, the world-building, the fashion, the music, the directing — none of it was random. It was always there.
