Britt Thomas of Bay Park on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Britt Thomas shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Britt, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day start when my kids wake up. I begin my morning routine with a quick 5 minute self-care treatment of lotions and potions. The three of us head upstairs and I make coffee and tidy up the kitchen and go over my to-do list for the day. While the kids play or watch TV i do some stretching, and decide where we’ll go depending on when I have clients for the day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Britt, and I am the owner and airbrush artist for After Glow airbrush tanning. I service clients of all ages and skin types to help them achieve their tanning goals. Whether it be evening out tan lines, a natural looking glow or back from a tropical vacation, I am able to help clients look their best. I’ve been an airbrush tanning artist since 2012 and have been around to see the industry grow into what it is today. I have managed a team of other airbrush artist for many years, but decided to go off on my own when it felt like working for someone else restricted my dreams.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful is when I discovered gymnastics as a child. I had so much fun, and feeling like I was in control of what new skills I learned made me feel excited about myself. Seeing the results of my practice and dedication confirmed this new feeling of power, and as I got older this same feeling showed up in different ways. Leaving a job or a relationship that no longer served my soul, or started my own business is how I’ve continued to feel powerful in my own choices.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self it would be to not be ashamed of my shyness. That being an observer and introverted is not a flaw, but just the way my personality works. In my business it’s perfect for someone like me, because I’m able to have one on one conversations and build relationships with my clients without feeling like I need to change my personality.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lies my industry tells itself is that social media or their business location needs to be aesthetically pleasing. While I truly appreciate a funny reel on instagram, or a beautiful salon, what matters is the quality of the products you use and the service you provide clients. When I have moments of doubt about my own business I remember that I do provide those two things and that is why clients continue to book with me instead of a competitor.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I am healthy and my work space is clean, and I have a busy day that will be profitable. Knowing my children are healthy and safe while I work, and getting to have funny conversations and connect with my clients puts me in a good mood. And if I had the perfect day I might even get to squeeze in a yoga class.
