Hi Derrick , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I’m called to put my self first before others. Self love is priority in order to continuo to share my gifts with the world.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
What’s happenin’ in Derrick Pernell. Born and raised in Atlanta. I served the Navy for 8yrs. I’ve toured the world as a Sailor and also have been in some of the biggest stages as a performer. I’ve worked/performed with some of the dopest artists on this side of heaven not just the celebrities but my peers as well. I roller skate, make music and I am learning to dj. I be doing the most…lol. I also go by “Dat Kat Inna Hat” it’s my brand I’m pushing, it’s more personal than anything. I’m putting myself first this season of my life and keeping an open mind regarding new possibilities.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I believe everyone around me saw me before I ever could. As I mature I’m able to step into my power and understand that it’s delicate, high vibrational and contagious in the best way! Taking some time to reflect to see myself has really been healing for me.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes I nearly quit everything after being homeless for the entire year of 2024. I can tell you first hand, to be here today is only by the grace of God. Enduring these challenges has continued to shape me into who I am today. I can reflect on it learn from it and keep moving and continue to embrace my true self unapologetically. Understand to every bottoms there is a top to every right a left and you for every defeat there is a victory waiting on the other side.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
I’ve always been my authentic self in public and in private, that’s no secret. . I find it way cooler to just do me and take note of what the results of that truly is.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel the most at peace when I am in solitude enjoying my own company and when there is no competition.
